I don't know much about this holiday, but I read that it's an ancient Germanic holiday associated with the winter solstice. Is that true?

True, they start selling, as always, some kind of candy at exorbitant prices, a bunch of decorations also at exorbitant prices, except that schools and some places decorate it just for the sake of it, although sometimes they can also collect taxes.

all modern holidays were bastardized by companies looking to sell things. doesn't mean people shouldn't enjoy their time with them. they wouldn't be selling if people weren't buying.

I'm going pumpkin picking and then carving with my wife. Not sure if these will be the edible kind, but if they are I will also make a pumpkin soup and cookies. I'm also planning to play a little bit of Resident Evil 2 remake on the steam deck and I might rewatch Gremlins, Hellraiser and Witches of Eastwick

Oh, we carve pumpkins sometimes too, but lately we haven't done anything at all, and I'm not really into scary movies, unfortunately. But it's nice to know you spend time together.

My kid is still younger, and we're going to make a costume. The neighborhood usually has great pumpkins carved on Halloween, and we usually try to carve one each. I try to find something to hand out, and this year someone got rid of a whole bag of smaller dinosaur toys, which are perfect for handouts. One year was old buttons from video game conventions, it was fun to watch people choose.
We sometimes buy pumpkins to bake with tasty filling, like ground meat and rice or such. We do a pie next month.

Pumpkin pie is wonderful, then you can make pumpkin porridge, pumpkin soup, pumpkin pancakes, and become 50 percent pumpkin)

Never celebrated, or at least not in a way i think that was normal. I do like h'ween, probably the yearly event i like the most, at least the more popular ones.
The issue i have with this event is some stupid young people take opportunity to cause problems to people just trying to live their lives. The typical prank we get is toilet paper put on cars and doors if you do not open the door (my parents hate this event, sometimes they even start yelling at kids, i do not open the door because i'm usually away or in my corner minding my own business). We've had years were some of the pranks were a bit too extreme, like throwing eggs/rotten eggs on cars, doors, gates, windows, imagine having to go to work the next day and having to deal with this stuff in the morning.
I even picture situations like this but being done with elderly people, this kind of behaviour is unjustified, it's like we have to deal with the lack of discipline displayed by newer generations. Back in my day, we wouldn't celebrate it in the typical way, we would simply go out as a group and try to hunt other groups and scare them to death, of course there were idiots present back then that would abuse and break stuff, but the stuff people would break back then, it wasn't other peoples properties but more so stuff from public areas, like containers, street signs and the likes.

Oh, that's sad. I've seen similar pranks on TikTok, but I thought they were isolated incidents followed by apologies, like on September 1st. But the fact that people just start behaving terribly on that day is clearly not cool.

Hey, it's never too late, even if you're really old, you can just change into a suit that suits your age. Besides, you're still quite young, so I don't think it's a problem.

It's something that in Europe, you normally do not see much being practiced. It's also going against my beliefs, so I don't see myself practicing now, regardless of my age. I might dress up with my daughter, but I don't consider celebrating it to be honest.

In here it's just an excuse for the bars and similar to do a thematic party, and I don't drink, so no I won't be celebrating it. All I really plan to do is maybe play a horror game this month and watch all of the halloween specials that youtubers like to do every year.

Our neighbor has an inflatable Scooby Doo setup in his yard. My two year old son makes us walk to his house every day to go see Scooby Doo. My son has never seen an episode of Scooby Doo and has no idea who Scooby Doo is, but now we play the Scooby Doo theme song for him a few times each week and check out every Juvenile Easy-level Scooby Doo book from the local library so that he can get more Scooby Doo into his life. He is obsessed with Scooby Doo thanks to Halloween decorations.

Lol, that's cool, when he grows up he should definitely watch the series!
I hope his expectations will not be disappointed.

Are you planning on celebrating it somehow? I'm from Ukraine, and no one here celebrates it except for companies looking to make money from the event.
It would be very interesting to read how this happens for everyone.^_____^
