Which do you think is better?
Half life 1 is classic game with this very special "atmosphere" that you can't find in newer titles (didn't play black mesa yet though), while Half-Life 2 is more like typical fps, which is special mainly because of awesome plot and mechanics :)
I enjoyed both, but liked the first part more as it was rare gem in my childhood games :)

Looking back at Half-Life 2, it does feel like a bit of a tech demo. HL 2 had, for its time, a very advanced physics engine, something that the game just love to showcase (plenty of physics-based puzzles). It's also one of the earlier FPSs that really tried to go the story route (it's not THE first, mind you), and I personally think the game suffers for it. Later (good) shooters are a lot better at masking just how linear they are (there is a difference between a game being linear and a game feeling linear).

Wait until you get to Ravenholm mate! Or is the water passage after that level?
Anyways best part of the game in my opinion.

I prefer Half-Life 2, all episodes. It has Alyx ;)
I played HL1 when it came out and it was awesome. Until you get to Xen which just sucked.

Yeah, I prefer the original Half-life as well and played them in succession. The atmosphere, level design, variety of enemies, cool scripted events and boss fights were very nice.
HL2 is good, but it has less variety and is more filled with gadgets (which is fun, but the atmosphere is quite upbeat and I don't feel the same oppression and darkness as the first). Haven't finished episode 2 yet, stopped at some point and played other stuff.
And really loved Portal games, they are more my kind of games.

I had this same feeling 12 years ago (the fuck...)
I really didn't mind the game as is, but it didn't feel much of a Half-Life sequel at all. Maybe as a standalone it would have been better for me. I was really missing the drastic change in environments such as with the Xen levels. I knew some friends who just flatout stopped playing the game at that point, but I always replayed them for those bits for the most part. Nothing like that in HL2, though the Citadel was pretty cool at the end.

I was more amazed of HL1 when I first played it, than I was by HL2.
Most people will probably vote for the successor, because they've played it first. Most people nowadays are all like "lol shit graphics" when they look back at old games, but I know what a huge expansion it was for the gaming industry and 3D gaming in general. It has literally shaped today's FPS. HL2 was "just" another good FPS, nothing revolutionary.
I enjoyed both games, but the first part is surely the "better game for its time".

Innovative puzzle-oriented FPS with great map design and enemy AI way ahead of its time and a story mode that was mysterious and interesting, although pretty barebones.
Spawned several official and unofficial sequels and mods that later became the foundation of a successful company.
vs
Generic pretty FPS with needlessly X-File-ified story of pretentious mysteriousness, level design and puzzles thrown out and sacrificed for one single game mechanic: a broken physics engine; enemies dumber than a bag of bricks, and vehicle levels nobody ever liked even the least bit.
But it has a great female side character.
Spawned two sequels that tried to salvage the story but even the devs realised it is a dead effort so the game is used as a joke of demonstrating that the developers cannot make a third instalment in any of their series.
Oh, and used the worst DRM in known human history that locked out a great number of buyers from being able to start the game.

back then in 2004, there was no such thing as a generic fps

10 years in the life span of the genre? There was. Plenty of those. It was so common and widespread that I had dozens of them as game magazine free bundled games. The disc for Sin and some sci-fi one I forgot even the name of may still lie around somewhere at my parents' home.

Not any game before 2004 had the story-telling of hl2, and the way hl2 gave life to the characters and emotions, animations, facial animations, and the graphics themselves were ahead of their time. Also physics was great (back then) so it was a big wow even though it was shoved up our throats.

Facial animations were great indeed. Better than many other games even 5 years later…
I would say physics were "new". They were never great in that game with feather-weight bouncing steel barrels and shipping containers that swung casually like they were made out of carton. We were awed at the fact that objects moved but it was apparent from the start that their movement and reality had nothing remotely in common.
Story-oriented FPS games were more like rare. The almost decade newer GoldenEye 007 was a story-focused FPS with heavy narrative. Heck, there is also Deus Ex, the first FPS that managed to be one of the best story-driven cRPGs of all time.
Not that story-driven FPS games are so common nowadays. Just because something is put into a corridor with tons of cut-scenes won't really make it story-driven, more like lazy to design levels and mask it with cinematics. (Not that it is an FPS-specific ailment though, games seem to be either open world or cut-scene riddled corridor simulators for many genres with only a few exceptions.)

Played HL2 for the second time not to long ago
Classic HL is an amazing game, HL2 lacks room to explore, its the perfect game for speed runs with very linear levels, run, shoot, solve physics puzzles, rinse and repeat.
Now that i think about it, one of the biggest downsides is that it knows too well its a game, stops you every to do specific things, with the intention of showing the physics and it was a big selling point back in the day, but now only shows how it can ruin immersion in a game heavy on story
HL2 might the better game, but the classic is the better experience, even though it had some issues

I really like half life 1 movement , its feels so.... FREE . it
s not like you weight 120 kg . I`m the only one who thinks like this ?
BTW , Click here to see half life 1 world record speed run

The HL atmosphere and enviroment was great, but sometimes people just like shooting stuff as in HL2
I like shooting stuff, but still ended up spending more time with HL2 and the mods(most time on mods)
Both had good mods, HL generally had better mods in my option, but HL2 had more
I'd compare HL to a good meal, and HL2 to a decent buffet so it depends on my hunger

My favorite was Half-Life 3.

I really can't choose one. For me Half-Life 1 was the excellent classic with Half-Life 2 (and it's episodes) being its excellent sort of sequel (pretty sure it holds a "classic" status too nowadays). I guess Half-Life 3 will have to be the one to blow my mind and make me choose it as the best, but unfortunately I still haven't created the machine necessary to travel to the mirror universe where Half-Life 3 actually exists. So for now let's say I like them equally. :D

Both are great, but HL2 def still hods up today, most of the game mechanics and designs that applied are still beeing used today, its just a masterpiece.
HL1 is great but since HL2 build upon them it only makes sense that now feels more "outdated"
in the end if you want to play them:

i'm new to SG, and i don't have a giveaway here ATM (sorry to disappoint). Maybe i will see whatever game wins this poll, and give it away if i ever make another "game vs sequel" and turn this into a regular event.
Anyways, believe it or not, i have never played any valve game with the exception of CS:GO before, and i thought Half-Life was just overrated. But in the latest summer sale, the valve complete pack was on sale for 25 bucks so i thought it was a good deal, played the games and loved them, especially portal 1/2. I tried half-life and it amazed me, literally became one of the best games i ever played (to be honest, i only played the beginning and xen levels, i played most of it in the "black mesa" remake/mod) and i was very excited to play half-life 2, but i still haven't finished it. Game just feels a bit off, i'm at the "water hazard" chapter and it doesn't feel anything like the half-life i enjoyed before. But this is just my opinion and i'm looking forward to hearing yours, Cheers!
