So, a level 2 user just added me on steam and opened a chat tab:

I'm pretty sure I didn't participate in any kind of contest. I answered to the messages but even though the user is still online is not responsive.

If this is a scam, what are the steps to follow in oder to report it?

Yeah... 'prntscrin' is a fake/bullshit URL AFAIK. Most people use imgur or... picbin I think it's called? prnt.scrn just sounds like a scam artist's business card. Let's break it down. "prnt" and "scrin".

Stick with what you know, always ask for an imgur link or something similar!

Yea, an .scr file is a screensaver file for windows. It is essentially an executable file that will probably mess up your system so don't download it or run it!

sorry, I did download it and opened it....... in a text reader. Cute enough, the word "Witcher 3" was in that file.
(It was done on a Linux Virtual Machine, so I wasn't worried :P But thanks for the warning ^^)

That is a common scam. Do NOT!!!!! click that link. You WILL regreat it. Report the user at Steam.

I didn't click, it looked way too shady. I'm quite newby on steam, so could you explain me how to report it?

Also, out of curiosity, how does the scam work? Where does the link go?

Most likely it'll download something on your PC, that's why I open shady links trough Linux. The other possible thing is a page that looks the same as steam's login, but sends your info to the scammers.
Edit:
NEVER OPEN .SCR FILES!

It goes to some link where they require your info and/or a file that you have to download. The file is malware which contains a virus which will steal all your information (Steam password, etc.). It is a common scam, and I've had it happen to me a couple of times. They try to pretend to be a member of one of the Groups you belong to (the bot probably scans your Profile to see which Groups you belong to).

People actually falling for this is the reason we are stuck with the mobile authenticator and crap like that. :(

Someone has probably replied while I am typing this, but this is how you Report someone. If that person is still a Friend, click the 'More' button located to the right of the 'Send Message' button on their Profile. It will then show you a menu that you can choose 'Report Violation' from. You would type 'tried to scam account' (or something similar) for the reason.

I hope that helped!

Rule of thumb - if you ever have to ask yourself 'Is this a scam?', then it IS a scam.

If someone adds you on Steam, and you don't know why, they're a scammer.
It's true even if it isn't true.
Or, put another way, it's like replying to spam emails. Sure, you may have found the rare gem that isn't a scam, but come on, that's a gamble no sensible person is going to take.

Received today a similar message, i think we can start blocking a new "scam bot wave" like the last summer...>.<
Always check for the link, "prnt.sc" is the real one (i've even used it to upload this screen) "pntscrn.su" is a scam

I always accept the request of every user on Steam now, but I usually remove it few hours later after I ask for what they want... maybe I should just stop to accept random request but ok.

Never acept friend invites of people owning less than 50 games. less than lvl 5...or private profiles...OR just never accept friend invites unless you want to add someone,or you win something here, and ultra check who you are adding.

if I followed that advice I would not have met some very nice people, some of them from steamgifts.

Permalink

I'd more stick with don't accept anyone who is level 0 unless you know them. Not everyone has 50 games or does the whole badges thing. Private profiles is typically a good sign though.

That's more like it. Of course you have to be clever enough, but not accepting any friendrequest sounds too extreme for me.

Can't be too careful these days. When anyone who adds you isn't recognizable always show caution. Never click on a random person's link they might send. Or do anything they might ask. Be careful :)

Remove from your friends list right now. That link the scammer posted will take your steam account.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I get added by people like those every few weeks. I think there are hundreds of those accounts around. Just don't click on random links and you will be fine. (Most links take advantage of those who don't have steam guard up and log in to steam from their links, then take over their steam account) (Some download a keylogger into your computer, which saves all username and password you type into your computer)

So it's not really scamming, it's phishing/virus

It was my first time ever today.
Of course I don't open random links, even less when they are so obscure. It's very sad to discover this stuff anyway, but I kind of expected something like this to exist.
