I am not counting the Brotherhood of Steel game or Fallout Tactics in this poll as the first was an abortion of a game and the latter is not an RPG, but a tactical strategy, combat game. I am also not counting Fallout Shelter nor am I technically counting FO4 yet as it officially launches tomorrow evening. I understand some press people have already played it, but this is more about your history with the Fallout gaming series.

Also, obligatory code for my FO:NV contest ql8pC

Edit: I am amazed at how many of you have never played a single game from the main Fallout series (44%)!

I have never played any of the four main Fallout RPGs, and I have *no* interest in playing

I've played all 5 fallouts, Fallout 1, 2, 3, New Vegas & Tactics. There are only 5 fallout games (soon 6), don't let anyone else tell you that there's one more. (I like tactics, so I consider it to be part of the series ;) )

Tactics is considered a good game if you are into that genre of gaming, but it is not an RPG like the other four, so I left it out of the poll.

Fallout 3 is not an RPG either. It's just a shooter with RPG elements. Fallout 4 will be a shooter as well

Thank you for adding that! So many people seem to forget Brotherhood of Steel. It may not have been the best game, but it was still fun and played a lot like Baldur's Gate!

It played nothing like Baldur's gate :(

That person means Dark Alliance, not the PC CRPGs.

I keep forgetting that that one is called Baldur's Gate. Every time I hear someone talk about it, they just call it Dark Alliance.

Apparently it was billed as a Baldur's Gate game because Interplay did not have the general D&D license, so they had to drop in that subtitle despite it not having any relation to the CRPGs.

The game is still, if Wikipedia is to be believed, set in the Forgotten Realms D&D campaign setting though, and its rule system is based on D&D 3.X.

Then you never played Baldur's Gate or Everquest Champions of Norrath on PS2, because it played exactly like them and was even developed by the same company.

I'm not at all familiar with EQ: Champions, but when people say "Baldur's Gate" I think of the game that's only called "Baldur's gate", while people need to specify Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance or just Dark Alliance for me to think of BG: DA

The complete name for TACTICS is Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel (a mix of tactical with some RPG) , first time i ear from the one for consoles, always thought, when someone talk about Brotherhood of Steel, was talking about Tactics.

Thank you for the link to information on Fallout Tactics. However, genre-wise, it is a game just about tactical combat. It is not an actual "Role Playing Game." Think of it as an XCOM if you will.

Im agree with you, however, since the game have inventories, stats/perks, XP/leveling systems is clasified as "mix" Tactical/RPG, we can say is a hybrid of turn base (i can remember if there was an option for real time / turn based) tactical with RPG.(like Diablo is a mix of hack'n'slash with RPG)

Comment has been collapsed.

Guess you are not familiar with Tactical RPGs, because Fallout Tactics is one of those that is categorized in that genre. RPG is a huge genre and there are many sub genres that fall under it. IE...cRPG, Tactical RPG, MMORPG, JRPG, etc.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I guess it's coming down to semantics I do not consider "Tactical RPG" a subgenre or mix but it's own genre that is distinct from full RPG (AKA full role-playing game). There are only 4 Fallout games that are "full RPG" and those are FO 1, 2, 3 and New Vegas. The Brotherhood of Steel one is a "dungeon-crawler RPG". Not the full immersive experience of the main four listed in the series, which is why I left Tactics and BoS off the poll.

Not at all, FO:NV is an excellent entry into the series. I only played Fallout Shelter up to 40 dwellers or so. Some of the special chars you unlock are key characters in FO4, but it is not an RPG. Just something to hold us over until 4's release.

No, think it would take a lot more for that. A lot of people haven't played Fallout. Just like there are people out there (Me) who don't like any of the Elder Scrolls series.

I don't know if it counts, but I rented Fallout New Vegas last year, and played about... 10 minutes of it. Control scheme threw me off, so never really "started" the game. Probably would have done more if my first experience was with a keyboard/mouse instead.

Fallout 4 looks amazing though, based on the E3 videos. The amount of customization really piqued my interest (not to mention defending the home base!!!)

Certainly never picked up a fallout game. The inventory management factor just annoys me too much as I'm the type of person who picks up EVERYTHING just on the off chance you need it.

Funny thing: that kind of attitude is almost mandatory in FO1/2/T, because some key items are just casually found at a location you would never have guessed in the first place. They were like Ultima games in this regard.

I liked it, but I admit bias for the Snowblind game engine used in the game. I've owned all but one game made with it (Combat Elite: WWII Paratroopers, unreleased for my region), and beaten all but one of the games I owned (Untold Legends: The Warrior's Code on PSP, as my system was stolen before I finished it).

Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel wasn't to the same level as Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II or Champions of Norrath, but it was still an enjoyable game, even if it pissed all over the Fallout story.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Totally agree with you! For a game that was on the PS2/Xbox consoles it was a decent game. It may not have been one of the best Fallout games, but it was fun to play.

I enjoyed both Champions of Norrath and both Baldur's Gate games a lot more, but again maybe it is because I enjoy Snowblind's titles.

Then, you should select option "I have played all four Fallout games (FO 1, 2, 3 & New Vegas)". I do not include Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel in this survey. Those are excluded per description. The survey is only about the four main RPGs in the Fallout series pre-FO4.

The old ones were isometric turn-based cRPGs. I don't know if that would suit you better than an open world FPS or not.

That's true, the old ones are very different compared to 3 and up. I love isometric rpg/tbs, but I cannot stand FPS.
