So, today my boss walked into my office, smiling one ear to the other, telling me he had a huge surprise for me. (I´m the it guy)
Cause everyone ranted about how bad and old their computer was, he went out of his way and bought 12 new ones, fully packed.
High end CPU, high end GPU (not by gaming standards, but still) and amazing 16 gigs of ram.
He also bought 12 Win7 32bit licenses for me to install... ...
I was really surprised, to say the least.

Is it a bad thing that by "boss" I thought you meant a video game boss? I read the first sentence and seriously had no idea what was going on.

They're still selling 32-bit Win7?

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes. Which makes no sense when installing on new computers with 64-bit CPU and 16gb of ram.
12GB of that ram will never get used, since 32-bit OS simply can't address it. (The other 4 also will not get fully used in most case, but that's less straightforward).

Boss probably meant well, but he really should've gotten 64-bit Windows. Price should be the same as 32-bit anyway

This, 100 times this.

But, like others have said in this thread, Microsoft sorts their key libraries by type (retail, OEM, premium, professional, etc.), not bit. A Windows 7 32-bit retail (for example) key will work for a Win7 64bit retail install.

You could always enable PAE on x86 and have all the memory detected, but yea installing x64 makes more sense.

In which case Windows 7 will still crimp you to 4Gb total thanks to hard-coded limitations, but individual processes can cross the 2Gb border. This falls under the "less straightforward" bits I mentioned ;).

16 Gb of RAM is kinda redundant unless you work in one of those big firms where you have 2-3 screens at your workstation and have to process 5-6 graphics software at one. Still, it's great of your boss to do that to your branch.

Photoshop can easily eat all 16 GB in less than half an hour, by the way ;)

Not always, right? I know people who has pc with only 2-4 Gb RAM and they sure can do better photoshop than I can. Maybe advanced version of PTS with advanced effects demands more processing power but the usual tasks do not need 16 Gb RAM

Quality of Photoshopping does not depend on RAM size, but on one's skill. =)
As for 16 GB - If someone is working with a print advert, for example, RAM gets eaten really fast. The size of a file for print can easily exceed 1-2-4 GB, and when it's loaded, Photoshop really bloats =)

Nope, like Vassay said, some graphic design tools nom 16 gigs for breakfast.

I used to regularly crash machines with 4GB of RAM back in 2008-10 as a student. I'm sure if you're seriously working on complex projects, you can surpass my paltry memory usage.

BTW, just today, when I was working, my favorite program had eaten a bit over 22 GB of RAM. That's what you get when you do serious VFX :D

they won't use 16Gb.....because they have 32 bit OS, their boss is nice but not smart.

Last I checked the 64 bit version will take the 32 bit key without issue.

Pretty sure I have done this...not positive though.

IF anything, installing a fake one and then going into the regs and putting the real code in SHOULD work....I think.

depends on your gender. If you're male then I do not see a problem with it but I've become quite cynical after an incidence involving my neighbor who was a temp, her boss, too many bottles of wine that night, and a lawsuit.

Do you boss a favor and tell him to change the Win7 license if he can. Explain why. Suggest he try to change the ram on the units if they haven't shipped yet. Attack it from his bottom dollar. ;)

Other than that, why do you see it as a favor from the boss? It is probably a business decision with your happiness and headaches are just as side effect of... .02

you can install and activate the 64 bit version of windows 7 with a 32bit license key as well. there is only one key for both versions. 32bit tells you only the version on the cd to install.

What he said. There is no such thing as a "Win7 32bit license". All you need is 64-bit install media and you're good to go. (Depending on the Windows 7 version, you may be able to download an ISO from Digital River.)

If you like I have AMD RAMdisk utility discount, add me if you want it for free, you can buy a license for 9.99$, it uses your RAM memory to speed up programs, very useful for Photoshop, but don't remember if this was the program or one from AsRock that made useful all the RAM even if you are using 32bit OS and have more than 4Gb of it. But it can be useful after too.

Also just go to a legal website to download official copies of Win 7 and download the 64 bit(there is one where you can download official ISOs) and use the Microsoft's program to make a bootable USB/DVD with 4gb of space at least, your 32 bit license works on both, if you still didn't used, because if it's OEM you can use it once it binds to your MOBO, but if you are installing on the same PC with same MOBO I think it should work.

Why 32 bit? You can't even utilize all the ram.

Go install 64-bit or something and see if MS will let you trade in the windows copies.
