Idle it then. Click on 'play' on store page, continue until download pops up and cancel. Now you can use the appid to idle it with ASF or idlemaster.

Ended up doing just that. Download speed dropped and figured that downloading & figuring out IdleMaster was better use of my time since I'm not interested in playing Cities during the event. :D

Do only the qualifying games listed count for the achievement? For example, the "Can't Wait" one says to "Play a game you purchased within the last 6 months," but it's listing games I've bought well over 6 months ago, a couple I don't even own. The last game I actually purchased from Steam back in March (and haven't played yet) isn't listed, or any of the game key's activated recently.
And the Clear The Backlog" says "Own a game that you haven't even played yet? Give it a try and increase your badge's level." I have a ton of those, some of which are installed, but the qualifying games list is only showing a few games, some of which I have played.

Started Max: The Curse of Brotherhood that I never played before, didn't unlock.
Played Dust: An Elysian Tail that I played over 2h and hadn't played in over a year, didn't unlock.
So it seems it has to be from their list even if it meets the requirements.

In case you're wondering, using SAM to open the games without downloading them works. It's cheating, but it's useful for those who have piss poor internet speeds.

I don't know about this, all external software can be bannable by Valve's discretion, beside automatic VAC bans. Of course, it's always use at your own risk policy.

My 1st game added was 'Shogun 2 Total War' (a retail box).
Steam says that the app id 201270 qualifies for the 'BLAST FROM THE PAST' achievement & shows the game's logo, but... idling it doesn't do anything...... and the last played game's icon (cover) on my Steam profile is gray (generic icon) instead of the game's logo.. still the link leads to the Shogun 2 page.... what's the catch here?
PS> Last played 19.12.2017 the game's page says in my library.
