I just tried the new opera 15 running on chromium and I think I'm switching from Firefox to it.

It's so fast and looks great.

anyone else try it yet?

Opera is better then firefox but chrome beats everything IMO, or well really, no differance I think, or maybe there is, or meh. And yeah obviously you're on Linux since you mentioned chromium (am I wrong here?)

I'm on Windows, chromium is the open source project that currently Google Chrome and Opera are based on.

I switched to Firefox because I didn't like Chrome too much and now I'm considering switching to Opera.

hated it... it lacks of everything that made Opera different from chrome or other things.
well, that is just because i'm using the browser since the version 8... so probalby is too different now.
it's fast yeah... but looks like a chrome clone (and the fucking thing doesn't even have a proper bookmark system, i mean, WTF!?)

did i say that i hated it?

Just realized theres no way to stop the browser from opening the last visited pages, and no good bookmarking system besides stash. Oh well I'll keep using it for a while and see if I find any positive things in it.

Agree with you. Plus I miss the integrated email client a lot and notes as well.
That's why I'll be staying on v12 for a while, to see what they'll do with the new versions of Opera. If I won't like it, I guess I'll be switching to Firefox or something.. :/

It uses up a shitton of memory, I compared it with other browsers and they actually use alot less memory than chrome.

I was gonna say. The only reason I don't use Chrome is because I don't want Google to have full reign on me with their spying activities. Bad enough I have their phone and use gmail. Trying to move away from the latter, but that's a tough one.

For some reason... Opera doesn't work good on my PC... I can't use sites like tf2r.com because i get a ban for using "proxy"... I don't know why but, sites like Google or Youtube appears to me in english (instead of spanish, because i am from Argentina)
i don't know why Opera do these things to me.. But i will try this Opera 15...

Opera has a sort of "accelerator" that proxies your requests through their servers, compacts it, and sends to your computer. Works well with slow connections or where you have a data cap (think mobile), but can give some weird results like you are seeing.

You should be able to disable it quite easily though.

I just tried it, now the fonts in Opera are just as ugly as they are in Chrome. Extended Opera settings are gone, replaced by rather useless Chromium ones, so no way to force font smoothing anywhere. I was hoping Opera to be the new Chrome with font smoothing done properly. Oh, well. Staying with Firefox with its pretty fonts, nice gif renderer and its option to not to load freaking tabs until selected.

The only thing in Chrome which DOES annoy me a lot is, because of my bookmarks, how slow it starts up. I mean really slow - like 10-15 secs every launch.

Unfortunately, Opera 15 basically is Chrome right now - nice performance, unusable. There's still some hope that this is just a temporary step and that future versions will restore the power of old Opera's interface and options, but until then I'm sticking with Firefox despite all Mozilla's attempts to destroy it.

Sticking with opera 12...

Chrome comes out on top to me.

Then comes Opera/Firefox in equal terms.

Safari comes last.

Internet Explorer comes from under the ground (burried).

Ps: No, i haven't tested the new Opera.

Yup. To be honest...IT SUCKS. Call it anyway you want but v15 is far from Opera we all know.

For me Opera starts with a bug. Access violation (I have a screenshot but I didn't bother investigation any further). Everytime I hit enter or paste & go I get this so I have to do it again, in the same tab or I'll get it again.

It's slower on my system and that says a lot since for me opera 12 does THIS quite often.
It lacs everything you would expect not only from Opera but from minimalistic browsers.

No GUI customization, no rss & mail client, no session manager, no bookmarks?:| (and no, Stash ain't bookmarks replacement), fonts suck, speed dial limitations, dumb down dev tools (dragonfly was awesome :().

If I wanted to use Chrome I would have done so long ago but I simply hate it.

I used to be a fan of opera for more then 10 years.
But the 15th is not Opera anymore. I lack the customisation in Chrome but this browser is even worse.
For a while I would on Opera 12.16, but if future (Opera 16, Opera 17) releases do not become better I'll switch to Firefox (already collected a bunch of extensions for it) or Sleipnir (a Chromium based browser too but with more customisable interface).

I want to like it, but the lack of bookmarks is just a deal-breaker for me. It runs much faster than Opera 12 on my computer (especially on sites like Facebook), and I really like how the new speed dial works (minus the giant Google search bar)... yet it simply isn't worth it if the browser lacks fundamental things like bookmarks. Who thought that it was a good idea to get rid of that?? I have to believe that a large majority of Opera users use them, and now they're gone. And no, the Stash + Speed Dial is not a replacement for them...

I'm sticking with Opera 12 for now, and if they don't add those features which we've lost into Opera, I'll consider moving over to Firefox.

I will stick with Opera 12 until bookmarks bar and more customization options will be available. I hoped for good old opera with just new engine, instead it is like new browser ripped off many features that made it my favourite web browser

Thanks for the heads up. I tried it, but I can't seem to find the customisation options of the old Opera, such as the position of the tabs and multiple tab rows.

Firefox is the only browser I know which handles a large number of tabs (100+) gracefully, so I'll stick with it. (Well, I'm using Pale Moon, but it's the same thing.)

I've just tried it. On starting page there is wrong search engine and no way to change it (at least I didn't find it).
Missing bookmark manager is also a downside.

I haven't tried it, but after reading the other comments I don't think I will if it stays in its current state.
If they removed all the features that made Opera great for me and more or less turned it into a Chrome-like (which I hate as it lacks so many features and customization options and takes wayyyyyyy too much RAM too), I really see no point in using it... :/

I have just finished reading this blog post where they explain their vision behind this new version and I think I'm even more worried now.
Firstly, they are adopting the utterly stupid "rapid release cycle" (thanks again Chrome for this nonsensical trend) where release numbers don't mean anything anymore ("And of course, Opera 16 is just around the corner."... sigh).
Secondly, they seem to be relying on extensions instead of built-in features and willing to over-simplify it for the "masses".

Give me my "power-user" browser back. :(

OTOH, doesn't it look like they're are nnot that confident about this new version when Opera 12 automatic update doesn't inform you about upgrading to 15? (and just 2-3 days ago there was an upgrade to v 12.16)?

Not really, they actually answer this in the same blog post: "If you find Opera 15 is missing something that you absolutely depend on, that’s why we still have Opera 12 out, and why you are not auto-updated to 15." and in this other one: "We have neither asked nor forced our 12.x users to upgrade to Opera 15, as we know that some features that are important to you are still to come. So, while you are very welcome to test and use Opera 15, Opera 12.x will still be alive for some time. You can expect that we will keep Opera 12.x up to date and secure. In the future, once we are comfortable with the feature set, we may ask you to upgrade."

At least they took the right approach regarding this particular issue.

I think I'm gonna stick to 12.xx for as long as possible, and keep Firefox as a backup (my web bank doesn't work properly on Opera so I already have to keep FF installed).

Installed it a while ago, feels nice and fast. I'm a chrome user and I still like the interface, the stash feature is good since it lets you find any text on the saved page, but it cannot defintely be a total replacement for bookmarks, really missing the bookmarks bar from chrome.

It's featurless even compared to Chrome, which is the ultimate in lacking features/customizability. Opera's fanbase exists because of it's ultra customizability and workflow, and none of that exists in Opera 15. If I liked chrome (and I don't), I'd use that over O15 because there's simply no reason to use it over Chrome.

I'll be sticking with 12.x
