871 games categorized
326 games hidden

Hidden games include:
trash (Brilliant Bob)
games I just don't like (Binding of Isaac)
games I finished and will never play again (Hero of the Kingdom)
games I tried and got some enjoyment out of but am not interested enough to finish (Inside the Gear)
"duplicate" games (Fallout 3 when I also have the GOTY version)

Non-hidden games are sorted into 69 categories, including the Favorites category. Many games appear in more than one category.
I sort by:
genre (jRPG, ARPG, Twin Stick Shooter, etc.)
series and sets (Batman, Bethesda, GTA, etc.)
common elements (Zombies, Dragons, Space, etc.)
I have some special categories like Kickstarter Early Versions and Free To Play (so there's a place for Path of Exile whenever I reinstall it).
I use the Favorites list for games I return to often. It's a pretty short list - a dozen or less.
I have a category called Want To Play which is a kind of on-deck list. Games I'm excited about. Some are installed and in process. It's my go-to category when I sit down to play.

In the past I tried 3rd party utilities that analyze your library and use Steam tags to sort your games. But that was a waste. Steam tags suck. So, I've been sorting by hand here and there in odd moments for over a year. And now I'm done! I even went back through the Hidden games to make sure I haven't accidentally hidden some. And I had! So I saved those from Oblivion.

How do you handle your Steam library hot mess?

How do you categorize your Steam library?

Not at all. Just one big long scrolling list.
I use the Favorites category but that's all.
I use categories but I'll never get every game categorized.
A place for everything and everything in its place.

I used to have all games categorized (back when I had 1500+ of them) but Steam derped and removed ALL of my categories so not going through all of this over and over again with such a massive library ;p

Ouch.. that's rough. I keep a backup just in case.

The categories are stored in the file $STEAM/userdata/$UID/7/remote/sharedconfig.vdf
(where $STEAM is the Steam install directory and $UID is your numeric Steam user ID)

Followed me here to insult me again? I got the notification when you insulted me in the other thread. That's usually enough for people.

Who's insulting you? I'm just stating an opinion. If it's enough for one, should be good for two. And you're the original one.

Just in case that you didn't know, Steam already has a filter for installed games included. You don't need to mark them as favorites to see them all.

I've given up categorizing my Steam library because when I hide games I can't see the categories anyway, and I normally keep games hidden unless I intend to play them right away.

Huh. I've never seen that approach. That would certainly keep your library uncluttered.

Finished Games and Unfinished Games. Finished games are games I'll likely never play again, or defunct multiplayer games I can't play. Everything else goes into unfinished.

Right click on a game in your library.
Choose "Set Categories"
Toward the bottom of the window that comes up is a check box for HIde This Game.

I use the "Hide" option for games I will never touch, card farming and stuff like that.
And I categorizes the games I finished, playing right now, maybe going to play, and just gave up.

That's a lot of stuff to categorize. I still have my library the way it was when I categorized it using Depressurizer... I should update it, but I don't have the will to go through it all.

I tried Depressurizer last year. I could not get a result that I was happy with. I literally could not find games I was looking for.

Horror
Jigsaws
Match-3 / Marble Poppers

Telltale
Visual Novels
Word & Card
zAll Games (starts with 'z' to keep it at the bottom of the list)

I'm playing Evil Within right now. Most horror I've done in quite a while. Unless you count Darkest Dungeon.

That happened to me when I used Depressurizer. Right now, having done it all myself, I find it very easy to find stuff.

Heck, just having all my ARPGs in one section is wonderful. I love that genre and almost always have one installed.

My categories are basically:
-Now Playing
-Play Next
-Play Soon
-Try Out (games that seem interesting but likely won't get too much playtime)
-Perpetual (basically games with endless replay value, like Civilization or Street Fighter)
-Racing/Driving
-Done

I think I've successfully categorized 15% of my library. XD Still, the purpose of this is so that I don't have to scroll down as much and so that I can keep track of what I'm playing next.

Well Done in categorizing your Library. I do not categorize on steam but I keep a file of most the games I have on Steam and select the games I want to play from there as I can sort easier in an excel file which I am used to.

Do you know Hero of the Kingdom III is coming out? 31 Aug, 2018 I had been putting off playing Hero of Kingdom I/II so I can play the wholes series :D

Haven't gotten around to organizing or hiding anything yet; haven't even found out how, or what limitations and such there are. Sounds like a neat idea, though.

I have a very organised library with 1300+ games in 72 categories. Which includes Sub-separations like:

2D Plat - Arcade - Casual
2D Plat - Puzzle
2D Plat - Metroidvania

RPG - Action
RPG - Comedy
RPG - Rogue Like

... And so on.. / This way, I can easily find a game that suits my mood for the moment.

Sorted by genre.

Some games don't really fit into one though, so I will need to change it soon. Like few years back "indie" category was small and significant. Now it's cluttered with many different games that are from few genres.

I have uhm... 19 categories. Some of the more common genres (action, casual, platformer, rpg, etc)... I also got

Early Access (mostly so I don't try to play it and realize -after- the I boot up the game)
Exploration/Walking Sims, Hidden Object, Visual Novel (their own categories because I have quite a few)
MMO/Multiplayer (anything without a true solo mode)
SteamGifts (self-explanatory)

Among my Hidden Games are...
Betas/Trials (never understood why they're still there after official game release. and the Tumblestone trial from that one Humble Bundle)
Duplicate games (older versions usually. Includes Pixel Puzzle sub games because I'm content using the parent app)
Trash (Zwator/Goo/etc)
Unplayable (things I had trouble with or just didn't work)
And a few other miscellany that I regret buying.
