I'm about to get my new PC and I'm not sure if I should stick to Win 7 or put 10 already instead. I'll basically use it for gaming so I wonder how many of you guys encountered issues with it, and with which games was that.

Thanks!

EDIT: Thanks a lot to all of you guys. I guess I'm installing Windows 10 to my new BEAST!!!

No problems so far over here. Everything's run smoothly, although there have been a few general issues that required updates and/or simple computer restarts. Game-wise, though, it's been smooth sailing.

I had some initial problems with tthings, but after manually updating all drivers I've seen no real noticeable changes in gaming. either positive or negative. However, my wifi adapter, when allowed to use power saving mode, blue screens win10 anytime it 'wakes up'. It took me a very stressful week or so to figure this out.

Windows 7 has had issues with power saver mode as well, I've had a few rigs that would blue screen with certain things set to power saver mode.
So that may not necessarily be a 'more frequent on Win 10' thing. :X

It's to the point that that's the first thing I check when I'm getting that kind of issue on a newly formatted system. :P

Interesting, never had an issue in 7, same hardware. Good to know though in case it ever comes up again.

In fairness, I've only been using laptops throughout Win 7's lifespan, so that may be a factor as well.

No problems with gaming here.... except for the Nvidia drivers that Microsoft tries to overwrite. That was a pain to get around but it's fixed now. Right as rain.

So is there a way to stop that from happening? Thinking of upgrading to 10 from 8.1 and I have an Nvidia card, would be nice to know how beforehand.

Windows 10 automatically schedules restarts by default. You have to switch it to notify a scheduled restart. He probably means that.

I coulda sworn that was a pretty consistent default for the Windows OS line.
As I recall, Windows 7's default is Install Automatically, which gives you a 10 minute restart-warning prompt that you can interact with to reschedule the restart.

10 gives you a warning, but it doesn't have a postpone or anything.
Smart thing to do is to check for Windows updates every Update Tuesday and install them, then you're done and no surprises.

Or you can just set windows updates to notify to schedule restart. That way it'll ask you to schedule a time to restart when one is required, but won't restart until you're ready to.

Ive had Windows 10 since it came out and I was also skeptical at first about playing steam games but when I got it, everything was totally fine. Of course I do have some games that are annoying to work with but I do think you can just set it into compatibility mode so in my opinion, Windows 10 works great!

None at all. Been running Win 10 Pro 64-bit for over a month, new hardware (i7-6700k, GeForce 980Ti), clean install. I've put in lots of hours on at least a dozen games, no hiccups at all. Win 10 itself still has a few kinks to work out, but nothing that impairs gaming.

In general, no real issues. My two pieces of advice:

  1. Do a Chkdsk before doing the upgrade.
  2. If you start getting an error where it says it can't load the Start Menu or Cortana and wants to restart, then does the exact same thing again after the restart, the easiest way to fix it is to bring up the Task Manager, scroll down to Windows Processes, then Local Security Authority processes, end that task, it will tell you it will need to reboot in a minute, let it, and then it should be fine.

As far as Steam games go, no noticeable changes. I have had issues with WWE 2K15 instantly crashing when I try to load it, but I don't know if that's Windows 10 or another issue. "Can You Run It" tells me it should run just fine.

No issues. Why would there be any? It's really not different than 8 all that much under the hood (imho).

The only stuff that will not work are older games that came with fucked up copy protections („Safedisc“ und „Securom“).
So unless these older games(which you usually have on CD only rather than on steam (if they are on steam, they usually don't come with said copy protections) are your thing, I wouldn't worry about it. If you really encounter a game that doesn't run because of this, you still can look for a no cd crack or buy the gog version.

No real issues. I think my Witcher 3 showed less FPS afterwards, but it could be any of the patches as well.. So Cant really say for sure.

The only real issue i see of is games that use Securom or SafeDisc will not longer work as windows 10 does not allow access for the protection.
https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/08/17/windows-10-safedisc-securom-drm/
Though i think for the most part that effects disc based games but still may effect some digital. They stopped support to make windows more secure.Though one title that does come to mind some might still play that uses Securom would be GTA IV.

Though asking people how games work on an OS is a bit of a crap shoot. As one person could have the same setup as you including the same OS,and you could run the game fine and it fail to launch for them. That being said over all i think any games that had minor issue have been patched bynow, but older games might be more of a crap shoot. That should be expected the older the games get the higher the chance of them not working on newer OSes..

Though i think it safe to say most games will still function fine that did in 7,8 as much of the core of the OS is still based on those. That being said it best to check to make sure the games you can not live without will still work, though i think you should upgrade and you will be fine. You can always go back to windows 7 if your not happy with it,you have 30 days to go back to your old windows.

Despite the pain some people may get running these games, I cannot say I don't agree with Microsoft on that one. Those two, along with Tagés, were an abomination that should have been killed off ages ago.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Tagés was not used as much and most games have patched out that DRM though some still linger.Though Test Driver 2 still uses it,even if bought on Steam, that still boggles me,and the reason i will not purchase.

Though it not the DRM itself that bothers me as much,it is the limits they put on it,even a simple video card change or window OS upgrade/format counts.Though i would say the dumbest part of it,was there was no manual way to deactivate the activation at least Securom allowed it lol.

Though you are right and i have to agree this is another one that should be gone, but the way i understand it it does not root itself into the OS like the others and that is why it can still be used.

So in the end would still avoid those games or if you can find a DRM free version if possible,i think the Riddick that uses it can be had on GOG now and some the older Anno games that used it,though if you buy them on Steam they get patched out.

Olfox, do this and you can get it to run. I found this on the Steam forum:

If I do a right-click on lcgol.exe > Proprieties > Comptability > I check : "Excute the program as an administrator" > Apply : IT WORK !

As of GTA4 I can launch the game but cannot load any savegame, it just permanently plays the pre-load movie & music, but the load never seems to finish.

I'm not sure if anyone can run GTA4 on 64-bit Windows 10.

I've been running Windows 10 Pro x64 since the Betas. No issues. The only issue I had with the final version was that MS<-->nVidia fuckup over drives on launch week. But thats long since been resolved.

Games wise, there's a specific kind of DRM that doesn't work by default in 10, I forget what it's called, but I don't have any games that use it so it doesn't bother me :) (MS disabled it by default cause of apparent security concerns). Other than that I haven't come across a game that worked in 7 that doesn't in 10. I'm sure there are a few out there that are already passed their use-by dates, but none in my collection :)

No issues with particular games, yet.

Have had issues with Lenovo laptops having drivers that would cause random crashing, in game or not. Seems to possibly be better for roughly the last month or so.

There's been a thing where apparently a windows touch screen service caused a DirectX crash every 15 minutes in some games. I mostly had it with Ubi games, but apparently it affected ones outside of them, also.

Windows 10 had a surround sound issue if you were using optical audio, but it's been fixed in the latest service pack. That was my only beef.

The only issue I had was with some of my older games failing to launch because of DirectX 9, which forced me to install the DirectX 9 (Jun2010 install) onto the system to get the games to launch. Initially they would just crash to desktop but after installing the one file it worked fine. Windows 10 refused to install the redistribute files in steam on install which I thought was odd (windows 10 pro 64bit).

I only had problems with a handful of really old games, but generally was able to solve the issue with compatibility mode. For one or two games I ahd to go to the community / forums to figure out how to make it work, though
