Interview with David Brevik. He discusses his feeling about Diablo 3.

Then this happened...

And I'd say Jay is right.

First: His "Fuck that loser" is more likely said in support to his fellow developer mate who felt offended by this dude basically degrading Blizzard Irvine, by how Blizzard North is superior in every way. I wouldn't be happy myself if I work on something for years, then someone tells me that I had no chance at creating a good game anyway because I'm inferior.

Second: This guy just better shut the fuck up after that shitpile he made called Hellgate: London. That's how much people matter, ain't that right Davey.

But are mad about something the community already have said.

It's still not the same. This dude has no right degrading a team that otherwise had no experience with ARPGs before, just because he made Diablo 1 or 2. He hasn't made anything worthwhile in recent times. It either ended up shit or got canceled.

For the Diablo 3 dev team, this game was their first ARPG. I'd say they did a pretty good job with that in mind. They are learning fast, and trying to fix the game based on community feedback.

I don't care if Mr. Daveydude makes some valid points, but in between lines all he's saying subtly is how he's the coolest dude evar.

Well Brevik didn't spend 10 years on any of the games and had money to remake the game. + one of tbe companies he worked for shut down(One of the games they are talking about on facebook). the community is mad because he posted this because i developer pointed it out, but it doesn't matter when the communit does.

Point is, he also messed up, and haven't made anything good since, I'd give two shits about his opinion if he'd still be king of the ARPG genre or something. He isn't. "People matter" my ass. Subtly throwing oil at the already rampaging fire is inexcusable.

Comment has been collapsed.

Except he is the king of the ARPG genre. If it wasn't for him making Diablo 1 + 2, your shitty Diablo 3 game you are defending wouldn't exist. He gave completely constructive criticism on Diablo 3 in the interview and adult baby Jay Wilson just responds to it with "Fuck that idiot". Yeah man, fuck that idiot who created your job and set a high bar for the ARPG genre.

Permalink

I'm still quite sure that "fuck that idiot" was meant as a "don't take it to heart, buddy", since the whole facebook thing wasn't meant for publicity. Also nice butthurt move on Steam. :P

Anyway, I'm sick of all the hate the game/devs gets, that's all there is to it. Even I know the game is not perfect, and I said that countless times.

Are you forgetting that facebook is a public social network?

So what if it's public? They can't discuss shit anymore as everyday people, because someone is always creeping at them waiting to blow some f-bombs up?

Hyperbolic, but the point stands.

Except that facebook discussion had something going on prior to that, not just a random fuck him just because. I still prefer people that say things upfront, than others who subtly try to stab you on the back.

Anyway, I'm done for today trying to defend Blizz. Looks like the ragers and haters will always be louder. I'm not gonna fight a wildmill.

You've volunteered for quite a paradoxical task.

Except whining and moaning on a public network about constructive criticism presented in a civil and thoughtful manner doesn't exactly strike me as "discussing as everyday people." You're deviating from the original argument.

A team with no experience in ARPG's tried to make a third game in the Diablo series, which is the patriarch of all ARPG's everywhere. They made a shit game. The only ones who don't realize how shit it is are the developers.

Criticizing is not degrading. People in society have turned into a bunch of pussies who equate criticism with being mean.

"I am also a little happy, which I hate to say, it shows that the people that were involved in Diablo really did matter, and so I am happy that it has come to light that how talented that group was and how unique and special that group was."

What is the constructive criticism in that? This is just a simple middle-finger to the D3 devs.

Most of what he said save for that was constructive, although that statement still holds some weight.

He's just telling what he feels. And that statement wasn't very degrading at all.

It's not a middle-finger. It is, however, a true statement that the original Diablo team really did matter.

agreed! David gave very personal accounts to his feelings and supported them all with logical explanations. you wouldn't expect anything less from an interview. in fact, it's probably one of the more thought out interviews I've seen. Jay on the otherhand and his entourage were very rude about it and immature. they got mad because someone had an opinion about something. and not just the millions of lowly peons that bought their game, but an original founder. like many said before, he said nothing that isn't anything different than what's been flooding the forums anyways. so I say right on David! and I agree 100% with his criticisms! I beat the game on normal and found absolutely 0 reason to play more. you can farm gold and get any armor you want from the AH. D3 failed in my and many others' eyes.

I LOLed SO HARD ! XD I don't see what got them so mad when everyone is saying things like that about D3 or even worse (most of the time worse XD). It's a fact that D3 wasnt what everyone was expecting and let a lot of people down.

I think that the outcry happened because it's perceived as a developer calling out another developer. This doesn't really happen very often in the industry, even among competing studios. At the end of the day, much worse has been said about the current D3 team, and I feel like Brevik wasn't so much putting them down as praising the original Blizzard North team. However, the other side of the coin is that what he said can obviously be seen as an attack on the current D3 team.

I love this comment on facebook "Don't worry about it Haga, you made the fastest selling PC game of all time. He made Hellgate:London." Hmm this is because of blizzard north. They made the game, and build up the fan base.

Pretty stupid thing to say, imo. That's only valid if they had made a brand new IP and had gone on to be the fastest selling PC title. Their sales are built upon D1 and D2 being commercial and critical successes with rabid fanbases that had to wait 10 years to get a sequel. If that isn't a recipe for cash in the bank I don't know what is. They could have taken any crap with Diablo 3 scribbled on a crumpled piece of paper stapled to it and sold millions.

My opinion on Blizzard has been going down since SC2's storyline was split up into different parts. That certainly peeved me off from the getgo, although WoL wasnt shabby at all.

I never really looked forward to D3 as I didn't play the previous Diablos at all (so sorry for that.) I'm actually quite glad I didn't, otherwise I'd be faced with both ME3 and D3 blowing up my expectations.

Permalink

Well i didn't play SC2 but D2+D3 and now i know i will never again buy a game from Blizzard. It feels like they punched in my face with D3 and that devs on Facebook.
You should try D2 though. After all these years it's far superior in comparison with D3

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Indeed, I do feel like I owe it to myself to actually give D2 a spin. I loved Torchlight, I'm looking forward to Torchlight 2, but with so much backlog I feel that it just doesn't take priority.

And yes, I agree with you. I used to look up to Blizz, but after D3, MoP and, to some extent, SC2, well... No.

Permalink

Heh, I gave D3 a 0/10 after like, a minute of playing it when it came out since my bro got the game for free with the WoW Annual Pass. I'm sorry, but any game that has a more or less unplayable single player mode due to shoddy internet is a terrible game regardless of how good it actually is or isn't.

lool arrogant ass d3 developers are blinded by the d3 fanboy worship, no matter how diablo 3 turned out in would have sold that well because it was the most hyped pc game of all time, similar to all the hype around modern warfare 3 last year. Their sales had nothing to do with the games quality or in my opinion lack of.
