Which Laptop Would you Choose? (if other, please state below)
i can't really see them anywhere. i live in a small town that the best laptop they have wouldn't even have a gpu.
but i'm familiar with asus ROG laptops prior designs, however it looks like they changed this generation a little bit.. (appears to of been slimmed down a little more then last years model) -- or that slimdown version might of only happened in the 15in models.. i can't really tell.

Without looking into them I'll just say that I've got two MSI gaming laptops and never had any issues.

that's the same with me and asus rog.. but i've never had any issue with MSI and always wanted to try their gaming series stuff. that's why i didn't just jump on asus rog again, thought i'd at least consider msi this time around. xD
also it's a really dumb selling point, but i use steelseries 3 engine already for my gamepad, so having it for both the msi's keyboard & the gamepad both would be kinda cool.

I'd ALWAYS go for ASUS as they have WAY better customer service.
Also, the ASUS has got an SSD, which the MSI apparently does not. You will benefit greatly from that. Go with ASUS!

the msi does have 256 ssd also, just very poorly listed specs compared to the asus. (middle of the title)
but i do agree on asus customer service. they've always been amazing there. their support sites download speed has always sucked, but that's the only downfall i ever found with them.

Alright, then consider the ASUS because of the superior cooling. In my experience, ASUS' cooling has always been way more quiet than laptops of other brands.

i'm pretty sure it's the winner for me already tbh. the only thing i really care for that the msi has and the asus doesn't is the steelseries engine based keyboard, which is really kinda pointless.. its just a keyboard.. lol.
prior experience in asus has been excellent too, so even though i have an interest in msi's gaming stuff. it's not a high enough interest really.
edit: also the no dvd drive on asus was just pointed out as well

SteelSeries Engine isn't that great, actually. I once owned a SteelSeries Rival 300 mouse and that software was utter crap. I'm happy to have found a Logitech MX518 on ebay. Logitech is superior in every regard.
Also, I wouldn't know how the keyboard would benefit from that software as it's a standard keyboard layout without any special keys? Also, the ASUS device is way more flat, from which you definitely benefit (I also once owned a gaming laptop). Oh an its design is more appealing. To me, at least. haha.
And one thing: The MSI laptop has a kind-of "glossy" surface. You will see fingerprints instantly. With the matte surface of the ASUS, cleaning will not be necessary as nearly as much as with the MSI.
ASUS is definitely the superior choice here. But do as you wish, it's your money! Just thought I'd let you know about my opinion. And I think you will get definitely more bang out of the buck with the ASUS.
Edit as well: I have a DVD drive in my desktop pc. I have never used it in 2 years. Also, external DVD/Bluray drives are cheap nowadays

only reason i have it is for my gamepad to function. it requires it installed so that it can keep the device firmware updated. but as for the keyboard that's my thoughts exactly.. its a flipping keyboard, shouldn't need software to control or manage or run it. lol.
the asus is very glossy too (if anything like my current one) -- but that doesn't bother me at all.
yeah on dvd drive too, wife is the one that does dvd playback from her computer anyways instead of me (she multiple displays to television, so i can game un-interrupted)

Nice looking controller, but did you ever consider purchasing an Xbox One controller? Most PC gamers have it as it's the best gamepad available. Can only recommend! Also, you do not need any extra software to use it.
As for the external drive, I happen to have a spare one. So if you would like to have it, just hit me up and I'll send it to you. Doesn't play bluray, tho.

yes considered it ever so briefly, i can't stand the layout compared to playstations layout. but it is xinput instead of directinput, so as far as games can tell it is an xbox controller. xD
edit: thanks for dvd-drive offer, but that's okay.. i wouldn't even put it to use really. in fact i kinda like the thought of not having the drive. i would think that excess space being free would just help with keeping the heat to a minimum.

Really? Wow! :D I simply got myself an Xbox One controller just BECAUSE it is different. The stick layout feels so much more natural. Maybe you should consider giving it another shot! Also, most games on Steam natively support the Xbox controllers (360, One) whilst other controllers often need 3rd-Party-Support, sadly.

According to their specs sheet they both comes with an SSD, just the MSI doesn't advertise it properly.

The only real difference I see is that the MSI has a built in DVD drive, while the ASUS doesn't.

ouch.. good catch.. i just assumed it does since my current asus rog does..
that kinda sucks, but really not that important to me.
edit: wife does the dvd playback stuff from her laptop anyways (which will be the one i'm currently on that has a dvd-rw drive). she does multiple display setup with a TV, so i can game un-interrupted.

I can only tell you what i tell everyone. Never evee buy laptop for gaming.

fully opening the case would be a nightmare, but it does have a very large door to access ram, 2.5in sata, m2 ssd port, & possibly the mini pcie wifi/bluetooth (not sure on wifi/bt though).
battery life for gaming blows horribly, but for basic browsing/computing it lasts ~3-4hours.
and another downfall is non-removable battery.
(all things i'm used to on my current asus rog though)
Comment has been collapsed.
Its all good if you can access the cooling system and I doubt it will be a nightmare unless you never opened a case.
Depends on the game( heavy ones chew the battery quickly) and the settings in the battery menu.
And yeap.. fuck those techs with non-removable batteries

well not really that bad. i've torn laptops apart in the past and put them back together, but the keyboards are built-in to the bezel itself so opening them up i would fear keys falling out. but idk how they are designed really, they could be attached well on the inside to the top bezel.
and yeah, i have two regular (non-gaming) laptops in my house as it is that don't function with the batteries that are shot plugged in, they have to be pulled in order to even work.. so i fear the future when that happens to a gaming laptop.. =(

pass. cause of prices
all i'm seeing is 100mhz faster cpu for $600+ more (new)
edit: oooh, and they're 1070 gpu too, i see.. still too pricey for me.. ty though ^^

dell's aren't quite strong enough for what i want until you move upto the alienware lineup, which is overpriced just for the name.
strongest i see there is a 1050 3gb -vs- 1060 6gb that i want. xD
also only 15inch on that page., but even changing to the 17inch models the strongest is 1050 till you go alienware @ $1,699+
Comment has been collapsed.
ahh they do sell some of them.. example1
do you have any idea if the SSD they come with is m.2 ssd or is it already taking up the 2.5inch sata... --- reason that looks pretty appealing is cause i can get it in the hard-drive-less version.. no matter what i get the 2.5inch sata ssd i have in this machine is moving over to the new laptop if it can, even if i pull another 1tb and set it aside. (already sitting on 1x brand new one just set aside)
i perfer dual ssd though and willingly sacrafice space for speed in my machine, and use network storage & usb storage insead for files/backups.
edit: i'll probably stick with my first two options (asus most likely out of the two) -- $25 savings is really nice, but not really significant enough to worry about.

I have a MSI GE62vr 6rf apache pro, I love it. I mean the only real thing with MSI is that the bloatware can be irritating as fuck. Like after I unpacked it, and got everything running tried playing some music, the sound crackled and popped and sounded like shit. It was the Nahinic (sp) software. Got rid of it, computer runs like a dream. As anyone on my friends list can attest to, judging from how I jump to game after game, after game and then go oooh pretty. Does get a bit warm though but not hot. Fan's a bit loud also I think it's slightly weaker on the right side. But other than that eh.

no matter which i go with it will immediately get formatted manually and i'll even remove all the manufacturer restore partitions. i hate the default bloatware crap all of them come with (asus does the same) xD
also either way i go, the hard drive will be replaced with a secondary SSD :D
edit: it will end up being dual-boot windows 10 x64 & linux mint 18 x64 like i have this laptop setup with ^^

Okay, so it's that time of year for me (tax refund season) and I decided i'm going to go ahead and buy a new laptop so that my wife can take over my existing rig and we can play games together without her running into any issues what so ever. Current Rig
I've been plenty satisfied with my current laptop, i can play gta5 (or similarly gpu intense games) on high settings just fine. but since i'm spending the money i'd rather do it right and make it future proof as well as gain VR capabilities at the same time..
Yes, I am fully aware a desktop would be far cheaper for even more powerful of a machine, but I do not care.
Currently I'm torn between two decisions.
the ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM-DB74 Gaming Laptop
or
the MSI 17.3" GE72VR Apache Pro-009
same price, same 6gb 1060 gpu, same i7 6700HQ, same ram sizes, same almost everything.
only difference i have noticed for sure is the ROG Strix has the better Thunderbolt port that can technically handle external gpu addons in the future. (the MSI might also, but i'm not seeing it on the spec sheet)both have the thunderbolt 3 port (msi just didn't list it in the text spec sheet, but it is in their image specs)update in differences: the asus rog does not have a dvddrive whereas the msi apache does.
which would you choose out of these 2x laptops? -- or is there a "other" option you would consider (besides desktop advice that i don't care to hear)
