Don't underestimate it. You can do serious games with this if you dive into coding with GML.
I already made some Games with it ( one being on Workshop ) so if you look for a good 2D Engine, this is it. There is also a plugin called GMOgre which brings an Open Source 3D Engine to it ( Torchlight I+II was made with it ).
And you can earn serious money with HTML5 Games.

GMS also allows publishing for Android, Windows, Mac, Windows8 and iOS.

Albeit Android and iOS are not included in this deal, but professional is a good start.

GMS is a good, versatile piece of game creation tool, no doubt (wasn't Spelunky for XBLA made in it?)
But I started with The Games Factory back in the days, moved on to Multimedia Fusion Pro 2 and gave GMS a try but Construct felt the most familiar to me due to my experience with Clickteam's software, especially with the new interface in GMS I was completely lost.

Say if two people are working on a game from different locations, would we both need two separate licenses to work on the project?

Yes. Most engine's licenses work that way.

If you're really serious about it I'd recommend saving the money and learning Unity.

I tend to disagree. If you want to make 3D Games, yeah go Unity. But for 2D Games GameMaker is way better. It is more powerful than it looks like. Forget the name for a second, you can do serious shit with it.
Although I'd like shaders. But for this price it is a good start into a carreer. Unity costs 1500 while this is actually affordable for everyone.
