I tried to watch Sword Art Online, after so many people have recommended it to me, and after getting to episode 5...

I realized I wasn't liking it at all, I found it boring, I found its cast bland and full of fanservice (At least Asuna is fanservicey, and Silica's panty shots were something I'm gonna regret seeing for the rest of my life.), I thought its plot was uninteresting and just an excuse for action scenes and fanservice to take place in it. So what did I do?

I binge-watched Kaiji's first season instead. Its main character is interesting, it's full of suspense, and there's no fanservice at all! I know they're not even part of the same genre, but that's not the main point here.

Should I try to finish watching SAO (Even though It's probably going to take me months) or should I go for something completely different?

don't like 99% of anime.

Then that result wasn't really unexpected. More interestingly, which are the 1% you liked then?

I used to play a lot of MMO games, and seeing them in anime was unusual

In that case you might want to check out the .hack titles. Were made quite a bit prior to SAO. There are a few of them, some better some worse, worth to check ratings to pick the right one.

Or Log Horizon

Thrillers would include Death Note, Shiki, Higurashi and maybe Steins Gate.

You might end up liking Kaiji, since it's a thriller. There's no fanservice (The first season has like, only one female character, and she's there for two minutes or so), the plot isn't predictable, and anyone can die. Also, gambling.

Who cares. I liked it for being interesting; kind of like Log Horizon but more of a focus on getting out of the game / real world stuff, whereas Log Horizon seems to just focus on the characters' acceptance of being stuck in the game and the weird changes that begin to occur.

I gave SAO a 3/10, so yeah. Kirito just annoys me to no end. And there are serious pacing issues all over the place.

I find Haruhi unappealing, to be honest, since I only like two characters.

Not saying it's bad, it's just not for me.

I couldn't even begin to understand how KyoAni thought that was a good idea to go through on. Even the original director was telling them not to do it.

There is pacing issues, but I found it awesome, and I am quite glad for the fact no main characters died from what I remember. Been watching anime a bit too much lately, but whatever :p, liked Akame ga kill, Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood was pretty good, there was a point where I got bored with the story in the middle though. My favorite so far would have to be death note. I will have to give other mentioned anime shows a go sometime though.

Been thinking of watching Akame ga Kill someday, but I don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon.

FMA:B is something I should definitely watch, since I loved the original's setting and cast, yet I found it boring after episode 10.

Death Note is great. Not among my favorites, but definitely a good show.

By the way, this might sound weird but I like it when main characters die, like Zeppeliin JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, or L in Death Note.

Not weird at all, L had to die for the story to progress, and I am assuming something else was similar to the other character, will have to watch that one too... lol. FMA: B is a very drawn out story, will have to watch the orig someday... maybe.

Started reading A Song of Ice and Fire just to see if I'd like it, since I hated the TV show (Sorry, Live action fantasy fiction is not my thing, I don't like the Lord of the Rings' movies but I enjoyed what I read of the first book a lot), and I think it's a pretty good franchise.

Will I stop being lazy to read through all of them, though? :P

Watching tv shows should be enjoyable. If the show is uninteresting to you, don't watch it.

You should try Log Horizon instead. Same premise, different execution. There is less action is LH, but the story is much better IMO.

I personally dudnt like the anime as much as the light novels. The anime seemed to add alot more fanservice, and didng feel as good as the light novels. The visuals were pretty good, but that's about it. SAO doesn't really pick up till Phantom Bullet, and I'm loving the alicization arc (best so far with really good story). But if you can't trudge through the anime, or at least the Light Novels, to the Alicization arc, then it might not be worth it for you. (Especially the terrible second arc >~)

Alternatively, I'd suggest maybe Log Horizon, which is much better imho, but not without its own flaws (don't simulcast, if it isn't over yet, wait till it is as it can get confusing if you do 1 episode a week).

There are afew other game based anime I've seen (dot hack series), and that I'm looking forward to seeing, but that's my 2 cents ^_^

Been told Log Horizon is great, and for what they've told me it seems like something I'd totally enjoy.

Read one of .hack's manga spin-off series "Legend of the Twilight", and loved it.

For my part I am simply happy others enjoy anime as I do and don't allow myself to get hung up on "us vs them" sports team, jock mentality that seems to seep into all hobbies. From video games to anime we seem to spend more time knocking what others like that we don't instead of sharing the joy we get from that which entertains us.

I guess I am kind of spitting in into the wind here. This is the Internet and it's all about tearing others down to make ourselves and our preferences feel superior after all.

SAO the light novel was much better than its anime adaptation. The anime jumps around too much and the pacing is off.

I thought SAO was good up until the second arc (ALFheim Online; episode 14 or 15). After that, it was just too dumb and slow paced for my liking. Hell, I couldn't even finish episode 14 of SAO II because it was THAT boring. :/

Honestly, I don't see why people loved SAO that much. It didn't do anything unique since .hack//sign kind of already had a story about a VRMMO world and them trying to escape.

If you didn't like the first episodes of SAO, you probably shouldn't bother finishing it. Quality only goes down (well, I kinda liked the first arc of the second season the most to be honest, but meh). As others have already said, Log Horizon is a better alternative. It has a great way of introducing basic MMORPG mechanics to the viewer, every character counts, there's no one-man army. It may have less combat & more political stuff compared to SAO, but if slow pacing doesn't bother you, you'll probably enjoy it.

The main problem with SAO, is that it's only briefly about SAO (the first half of season 1). The rest of the show... it's not SAO. (Mostly ALO with a brief foray in to gunworld w/e that was called.)

First season is good until 14th episode, after that it is kinda boring. Second season almost same, good until some point, then a little boring.
