Here's the astrotrain

Normal rules apply. Please don't post in every giveaway unless you have something funny, witty or interesting to say (and please don't just do something predictable like post "something funny" or a variation on that. It's getting old). And don't post where you entered from. If people who enter through leaked links are so lazy that they can't be bothered to get to the end of the train to check where it's from, it's their own darn fault they're getting blacklisted.

And instead of just posting "bump", please tell me what your favourite cartoon or comic was as a kid. Mine should be quite obvious ;)

Can't you get through? The requirements are so low that I can't see why you would not be able to make it through. And while I agree with Steffke about the ref-link thing, Sgtools also saves me so much trouble with re-rolls and people getting angry about having the game re-rolled that I don't really want to stop using it.

I'm a bit jealous ;) As a kid, I absolutely loved transformers, and that in turn got me into sci-fi in general, which in turn made me the man of science I am today! While I've mostly left Transformers behind me, I still have a lot of nostalgia for the G1 line, and I did buy the Transformers bundle on Humble and have read several of the comics that came with it.

IDW brought out compendiums of the original run from the beginning around 2-3 years ago. I'd strongly suggest people buy them as well as they are excellent. They aren't cheap but are available in the high street.

I've actually read some of the comics. I really like the art in them, and the ones I've read have a similar vibe to the original series.

I also read a lot of the comics from the original series. I remember the issue (#9, I think?) where a mobster that was running away from the other mobsters that wanted to kill him found Megatron (in his gun form) lying on the floor of a creek bed. He picked it up, and when Megatron transformed, he had no memories of who he was. So, he helped the mobster become more powerful...until he got his memories back. Wasn't so good for that mobster after that!

I think IDW has reprinted that series, as the one from Marvel has looooong been out of print, and I don't think Marvel went the trade paperback route for that comic.

I didn't really have a choice which comic to read as a kid. I just went through the old stuff that I received and that was mostly Spider-Man and The Phantom. Not the worst options.

Transformers, fittingly enough for this thread :)
Although I do think that everyone who thinks the original Generation One cartoon is a flawless masterpiece should be reminded that it also had the episode "Carnage in C-minor".

And was FULL of mistakes, Starscreams voice on Thundercracker, Jetfire changing his deceptacon logo to autobot and back again like a swing, constant animation errors....

But, owning all the dvd's, I still absolutely love it! It adds to the charm.

I'll one up you and say the episode "Autobot Spike" is worse.

Without nostalgia goggles, it's hard to actually like the old Transformers cartoon ;) It full of wonky animation errors, characters randomly changing size, inconsistent plot lines, predictable plot lines, lazy animation and a lot of other issues,
The comic books (during the later half of their run) were a lot better, and actually had some compelling stories.

Deaths Head was cool, the literal killing off of 'formers in the comics was cool, however the random resurrection of them sucked a bit, Shockwave got a decent run in the comics, he was wasted in the cartoon. It was a shame they waited until the film to get gritty and they then needlessly killed off too much of the cast to introduce new characters because toys. Reboot G1 please, make it gritty and aim it at the 30+ crowd which grew up watching Transformers. I've said for literal years that remaking cartoons for adults using the same cartoons they watched as a kid is a no brainer money maker.

Honestly, watching the dvd's back I still love the cartoon, even the mistakes are funny.

I highly advise people to go play Transformers Devastation for their dose of G1 nostalgia, it's short, only get it in a sale(unless like me you are a huge G1 fan and couldn't wait),

Ah, the "freelance peace-keeping agent" Death's Head. He was only in the UK run, was he not? We got a strange mix of UK & US comics here, with some UK stories never getting completed

Shockwave was my favourite Transformer ever since I read my first TF comic (which was the one where Optimus intended to fake his own death, but got thrown into the space bridge together with Megatron and ended up on Cybetron).

And yeah, a reboot aimed at an older audience would be fun. As long as they don't go overboard with making it too dark & "mature".

Yeah Deaths Head kills Bumblebee and that's how he becomes Goldbug. It's interesting, basically America got the main toy line and got told how to run the story. The UK got thrown the "inbetween" episodes and all the unwanted shit, however because Hasbro didn't care as much about it they got free reign to do what they wanted with the characters and story. So thats why the UK version has excellent and gritty storylines, eventually Hasbro saw the sales figures and the guy writing the UK comic got put on the US comic. It saw an upturn in the quality of the comics as a whole and they got centralised. Eventually the TV show started to dictate stuff more and more though and killed the comic a bit.

This is a very very very short description of what happened obviously.

I think an important part is that Simon Furman actually cared about the stories he told. He probably liked the characters and wanted to make something good about it, while the earlier US writers likely thought they were stuck with yet another toy commercial in comic book form.

It's hard to keep the US & UK comics apart, but I think the vast majority of the stories that I enjoyed were from the UK line, and the post-Furman US era. Though the UK line did get some stories that did not make a whole lot of sense, like the Man of Iron.

There's also another reason why the UK comic is what it is is because of the release schedule.

The US was had monthly releases, the UK weekly. The UK run also had shorter issues, but even with splitting the US stories in parts they still needed a lot of filler to keep up with their schedule.
Using all the leftover characers that didn't appear in the main storyline was one of the easier ways to a) avoid continuity issues and b) sell more toys (in particular, at the time they were the only medium Topspin, Twin-twist and Whirl appeared in).

I liked Shockwave as well as Soundwave. I enjoyed them both, particularly Soundwave. I just liked the tape that he could shoot out and it would make a smaller Transformer.

Unfortunately, I think if they made a reboot aimed at an older audience, it would be really "dark and mature" due to the nature of many shows on television right now, such as The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and the like. It's like they don't think a show can be enjoyed unless it goes the "dark" way.

Fun fact: B.O.T was in fact the last bit of weird from season 2. That also includes other gems such as "Autobot Spike" (to start off the season), "City of Steel" (aka. "Remember the time Optimus got turned to scrap without dying and getting resurrected ?") and "The Girl Who Loved Powerglide" (aka. "Chicks dig bots who look like a dildo and are named after a brand of lube")

My favourite cartoon as a kid was Scooby Doo, Where Are You? . This was the series that didn't have crappy-ass Scrappy Doo in it (man, I HATE Scrappy Doo!!!!). I also really liked Inspector Gadget, G.I. Joe, Transformers (the original series and the one that took place after the movie were my faves), Tailspin, Duck Tales...wow, I just realized there were a lot of good ones back then!

Transformers Headmasters? After the 1986 film or the Bayformers films?

No, sorry. I meant the first animated movie. The one where Optimus Prime died (as well as so many others... I saw the movie in the theater...I had something in my eye that night), and the new series introduced Rodimus Prime.

I own the first 3 live-action Transformers movies on DVD but haven't had a chance to watch them yet.

Don't, they pale in comparison to the 1986 film. Orson Wells last acting performance as well may I add as Unicron.

As I've said above, I like the film, it was good but they waited too long to get all gritty. They killed off too many people in that and what was even worse the continuity was absolutely screwed, they went from Spike and Carly being teenagers and the Autobots and Deceptacons fighting, to Spike being a grown man with a child, Autobots owning an entire city and some chump kid named Daniel appearing with no explanation. Then Optimus Prime kills half the deceptacon cast, Optimus dies, we get a film about 3-4 transformers we've just met and no one cares about.

Thank God Grimlock was there to save things.
