Honest question, are majority things you buy on Steam solely for giving away?

Pff, I've only got to get you to win 389 more games to ruin your ratio, that's totally doable.
I mean, unless you keep on being a bastion of generosity or something, but really, what are the odds of-
HEY. Back away from that Create Giveaway tab, you! >:|

On a completely different topic, my IndieGala account was just locked for "suspicious activity." Nothing unusual on my Paypal or CC accounts, so I must be blocked for purchasing too much. I emailed them to get it unlocked. -_-
Now I'm having nightmares of them doing to me what they did to you. :X

I joined for free games!
But to be honest that didn't work out from the beginning. I gave away 8 games before I won anything, and I'm 90% sure they were all bought for the purpose of giving away. I forget why.
Now I just enjoy lurking around the community and giving stuff away sometimes.
I'm sorry about your friends though. Most people here are pretty appreciative, especially on the forums. <3

I started using steamtrades a while back for buying cheap games from Russians and trading surplus bundle keys. But region locks put a stop to the cheap stuff and I got sick of people trying to haggle over the price of Minecraft accounts I didn't even want in the middle of Borderlands 2 boss fights because they had seen I had a trade thread up.
So then I noticed steamgifts and decided to dump surplus keys here instead. I think I also had some vague ideas about using it to promote places I sell my art online in giveaways but I'm too disorganised and lazy to have ever done that properly. I did meet some nice people here though, and maybe the whole giving away thing got a bit out of hand at some point...

Probably be a few more soon, if nothing else I've failed to win Alien: Isolation after many attempts so I guess I'm going to have to go ahead and buy the whole damn bundle and I doubt I'll want most of it. Oh wait, that's another game on my wishlist that I already gave away that I could have just kept for myself...

This month's bundle looks like an odd one, between the 10% off on it if you bought the Firaxis bundle, and the 1-less-to-total-games (6 total instead of the usual 7).
Hopefully that's a sign that the remaining games are really good, not that they valuated the bundle with the expectation that you'd be using the discount, or something.
From what I hear of the refund policy toward it, it ought be worth the gamble, though- seems like it's pretty easy to ask for a refund if you haven't activated any keys.

I'll be activating Alien: Isolation. I do really want it, I just hope the rest will make at least worthwhile giveaways! But I've already cancelled my humble monthly subscription in disgust once, if everything else is crap this time I won't be happy...

back during the 2011 christmas sale, i won a copy of worms revolution (i think, i know it was a worms game, but i dont remember if it was that one) during that insane coal event. i didn't want it. my friends either didn't want it or already had it, but it didnt really matter because steam trading had just launched and was a piss-poor product. was looking at the steam forums, someone mentioned this website, tried it out, thought it was the best lottery ever, stuck around.

I joined because I wanted to win games and it seemed like the place to be....
Then I won a game the very next day....
I was excited and tried to figure out how to win more....
The answer was give away stuff....
Nearly six months later...
Waiiiit..... What happened.... I'm not entirely sure... But somehow I give a lot more than I win, and somehow somewhen, I stopped giving away bundle games exclusively....
I'm still trying to figure out how that happened.... Well how all of it happened....

+1
Found the site when trying to get rid of a copy of dead space 2 a while back but all my friends had it and I didn't want the key to go to waste, I ended up on the trade forums then later noticed that people give away games for free. (O.O)
I generally ask my friends if any of them want stuff before posting it on here.

So what does that mean? Well, I don't think I'll be giving away much to my real-life friends anymore.
Oh, you could at least give them some manners. They seem to be awfully short on them, after all~
:P
I got recommended to the site after early trade attempts [while much nicer and polite about it, none of my friends were too keen on sorting through freely offered games, either].
My initial motivation was similar to yours- those spare keys sitting around wastefully were agitating me quite a bit.
I didn't think much of sg at first, but there's a large portion of the community that doesn't fail to continue to impress, inspire, and encourage, so it wasn't too long until I was hooked firmly in :X

Hi,
My question is pretty simple. What motivated you to join this site and give you games away?
I've been told that I don't have enough experience in this site to join most giveaway groups, which is fair enough, as I've only been a member for a few months. I have however found a lot of really generous people who give far more than they receive, as well as people who receive without ever giving back. To be honest, this site caters for both, from what I've seen. And that's why I want to be more active here. I love giving and a enjoy receiving, but I like giving far more.
The reason I ask the question in the first paragraph is to tell you why I've joined this site and find out what your reason is. I used to buy bundles when they looked interesting, and after a while I accumulated about twenty duplicate keys. So I figured that I'd ask some of my real-life friends if they're interested in free games (since I can't use them). I assembled a nice spreadsheet with the names of the games that I had extra, added pictures of the gameplay and the covers for each game as well as a link to the steampage for each title. I even wrote a small summary of each game that I'd tried, describing what I like about it. This spreadsheet was send to my friends telling them to let me know what they're interested in. So I waited. And waited. After three days I quietly asked if anyone had even looked at the list. I got a few uninterested responses, with my friends each seemingly reluctantly asking for a title. Kinda like they're doing me a favour. I'll be honest, that hurt a little, so I starting looking for alternative ways of giving away my keys without having to (almost) beg people to take it.
So I joined this site. Now I haven't been around for very long, and I haven't given away a ton yet, but that's going to change. The reason is that I recently got duplicate keys for Thief, Murdered: Soul Suspect and Alien Isolation. Surely my real-life friends would leap at these (I know. I don't learn quickly)? I didn't make the same effort I did the previous time. The names were WhatsApp'ed (is that a verb? Should be) to them. They each asked for a title again. So at least that was faster than before. However, did I get a thank you? Barely. The friend who took one of the games had to be prompted to simply tell me if it activated successfully. (I knew it did. He activated it minutes after getting it.) I got a thank you three days later.
So what does that mean? Well, I don't think I'll be giving away much to my real-life friends anymore. If I give away a title on SteamGifts and I don't get a thank you, it's a random stranger on the Internet. So I'm afraid that if I have extra cash or keys from bundles or both, I'll be unloading them here. On you. Sorry. :)
Thank you for sitting through my story. As a reward, here's a little something. If you win, I would appreciate a thank you. I really dislike it if someone wins and does not activate the key, so please activate. You do not have to say thanks for each game you enter, but if you do enter something, I'd like a bump. :)
Here's hoping this is the start of a beautiful friendship. Or something.
