Hi there, first of all happy new year everyone :)

I haven't found the usual post about devs raising the price of their games before the sale this year. I thought this practice had fallen out of fashion, unfortunately when browsing the different games i stumbled on one.

A raise of 10 bucks on Wreckfest a couple of weeks before the sale : https://steamdb.info/app/228380/

I know it's late on the sale to start this kind of post but eh, better later than never :)

Have you guys/gals noticed any other studios doing the same kind of practice?

Have a great day.

i see it all the time, though mostly for crappy ios games. I would generally take it as a warning that the game isn't good enough to stand on its own if the devs are sinking to rigging the %dropped to get higher on lists. The same applies to a distribution site doing such 'sales' simply to make a name for themselves. Still, I'm sure there's idiot pr people out there that think that they can get away with such a thing.

War Thunder publishers did this prior to the Summer sale.

I remember there being a huge thread about it on neogaf and reddit.

Deponia games always get a price increase prior to their sales. That's why there's a "bug" that turns what is usually 20p to 100p at times. So Wreckfest is being conservative. haha

Nope, that is because the pack is discounted to a price lower than the games normal price, so those show up instead.

Ahh. My bad. Thanks for the clarification. Corrected.

That bug is the Armageddon bundle dropping below 20 dollars, where the site replaces Deponia with that bundle. If you look at Deponia's price history, it shows a consistent 20 USD full price.

Ah damn. Someone made a case for it in an old thread saying the games get a price increase so even if the games go on a huge sale you'd still be paying the same amount. Thanks for the clarification.

That is an actual practise and some large publishers liked to play that too, but ever since a large community tracks all kinds of statistics on Steam, I only see rookie publishers or known shadier budget range companies do that.
Another example is when a game with actual work put into it slowly getting out of early access, when they increase the price to the "normal" range, this way saying thanks to those who bought the unfinished product by letting them know they got it at a better deal. (Although you can also see the intro price immediately getting a few-day discount to let those who are just a little late to the party, still get it at the better price tag.) While this is frowned upon, I can get behind this one.

Activision is guilty of this in every motherfucking sale, this one not excluded. Their business plan involves releasing shitty games and then giving them a price hike before the sale to cheat potential customers. I'm sure there are others like that in this sale too. Some of those prices look really weird.

Its an early access title. Early access games raise their price as they get closer to release all the time. Now if the price drops again after the sale has ended then you can call them out on their fishy schemes, but until then its just business as usual with a wary eye.

The game has been on early access for quite some time, maybe this might be it as there's only one other price raise during the year it's been out. Actually around the same period of time 1st dec 2014 and 1st dec 2015.

a lot of indies did that for halloween, stuff that was worth $5 went up to $10, then back to $5 (cv difference was noticeable).

of course, valve doesn't care.

In all fairness, I don't see why this is Valve's fault, they're just the store, the stock price is decided by the provider.

Maybe because it is against the law in many countries? And while Valve is only the store they do have some say in the matter. They can even make a rule that in using the store to sell games you have to agree to having a consistent price.

Easily solved. They just wont do shit until they get hammered by a trade body somewhere.

it's tricking your customers, and since they should act as a filter, it's their fault imo.

unless they want to become the next g2a, they should take some effort to monitor this.
