Apparently the whole Brexit thing was fake. 20 days had passed and article 50 has not been activated, meaning there was no plan and no real wish to leave by anyone, those who supported the "leave" campaign have already resigned and want no part in what follows.

But yes, the death penalty would finish off any chance of joining the EU Turkey had, it doesn't seem to be a problem for Erdogan though, he doesn't want to join in the first place.

Please don't jump to conclusons. This is something that just can't be done fast. I'm not sure how it looks in GB but in Poland many new laws can't exist without EU normative acts. Before EU - our laws were just laws. Now our regulations looks like: this and this is regulated by (WE)666/2016, this and this is regulated by (WE) 555/2009 and so on. And it's not a single regulation. Almost all of them that were implemented after joining to EU looks that way. Before quitting they have to prepare. Too much rush and country might fall in chaos.

But yeah, people shouldnt kill each other for no good reason. But if you think, about it, people shouldnt smoke or drive cars all the time, because this will cass a mass genocide to everyone alive on earth, but nobody cares... cough And there are few special cases where killing that one special person shouldnt make you feel guilt. sorry, but it's just like that ^^ I mean no point that guy comes rapes 50 kids and you later feel guilty cuz you shot him before he got your own child you know :p And one special someone is the reason for the last few bombing in a special country near greece and bulgaria and a recent special military event and that special someone is seriously playing the whole world for fools. Wont mention that special someones name, but I really someone ends him soon, before his special plants come into action and it's too late. And Im not even talking about ISIS atm ^^ Just a special men in a special country on a special post, with special rules to randomly forbbit social networks and later speak how democratical he is ^^

Poor guy. He's just a soldier and people must know they just follow the orders. Hitting them is wrong even if they are responsible for shooting to crowd.

Just arresting them and delivering to security team is enough but sadly violence is the nature of coup / revolutions.

I agree that they shouldn't be hitting him if they've already captured them and have some way to secure them, but I don't agree with the excuse that he's just a soldier and following orders. People should not follow orders when they know what's being ordered is wrong.

Disobeying the orders in military is not something usually happen when :

  1. You are among the lowest ranks.

  2. It's the first moments of the show ( coup ).

I do not support violence against protesters but it's not really easy to understand which side of the show is wrong. It will take time to understand how's the situation and meanwhile you as a low rank soldier with a gun in your hand just will follow the orders come from your supervisor.

I don't know what to believe at this point. Without proof truth is subjective, meaning none of the claims can be considered true or false. Therefore we could say that the claims the Turkish government is making right now concerning the incident of last night may very well be true. But we could also say that the whole thing looks and feels like a complete farce designed to manipulate the populace into thinking that there is a secret group within the army and higher echelons of the justice system and the culprit behind it all is some guy hiding in Pennsylvania. And they really want to get their hands on that guy who is protected adamantly by the US government.

Personally I don't support Erdoğan or his government because I do not agree with their politics or their radical views. I have always valued the truth more than my own feelings, but living in Turkey one has to come to terms with the fact that whatever the media tells you will be exactly what the government wants you to think. Therefore I'm really conflicted at the moment.

All I know is that if I had chosen a career within the military I could very well be on that bridge tonight if it was a real coup.

It's not about that, but simple flow of information. In the distant past, people received news of their very tight surroundings and it was relatively easy to control the general large-scale news even in something as complex as Rome itself.
Now, when information is so easy to obtain and check, people still just believe the first thing they hear and can be conditioned to reject any kind of argument—even if it is based on hard facts that they can see and feel themselves—that doesn't fit into this picture.
And it's not just Turkey or Russia, or China, but most countries of the world.

Confirmation bias. Should they want to believe in information that looks like total crap to them or information that looks like something they would like? As I said, most of them want happy living and no major shit coming their way. Even if that is not true, they still would like that.
By the way, many sources of information adds extra work to read all of them and compare. As one of memes said - "Ain't nobody got time for that!". There is reason why Fox news are so popular among republicans and why researchers are talking about Facebook "echo chambers".

Yes. It is one thing to respond and clarify in communication while discussing ideals. It is a completely different thing to attack someone because they have a different perspective.

These kind of reactions are not what I have come to know from 'the religion of peace and those that humbly submit their lives to God'. In fact, this kind of a reaction seems completely contrary to the true, peaceful nature of The faith.

Please refrain from comments that create more heat than enlightenment. This will do well to give honor to your beliefs and to not show disrespect to the values for which your religion stands for

I did watch the video. I do agree that Turkey has a proud and diverse people. Both historically and with recent financial and other achievements. These are good things. Maybe it is because there is - or at least has been - apparently a good balance of faith and Islam in Turkey that has made this possible. That is also a good thing. People as individuals are imperfect. This is normal. People as a community and part of a nation can accomplish much together. To do it more frequently is, well, historic.

All of these achievements are things to be recognized and respected.

It is not the achievements that I believe those with an outside perspective question. What I believe is the point of concern and criticism, is the methods in which this takes place. If one person is favored above another and another person is hurt (or killed), then that is the issue. As individuals, they must be responsible for their actions - even in the negative. All leaders must be willing to submit to their own followers (and legal systems) accountability. I have heard it said:"The greatest saint can be dishonored even by the smallest sin." If achievements are built upon by the pain and suffering of others, then there is no real glory in them.

I am deeply concerned over the coup of this last week and the long term effects. This is something very personal to me as I have two Turkish friends who were to be married this weekend. I pray for their safety and well being as well as the rest of the nation and those who died needlessly.

Unlike many outside Turkey, I have taken an interest to learn about the culture and it's people to gain understanding. I am finding great beauty and insight in Yusef Emre's poetry. For me, the saddest thing for the culture is the loss of it's language in the past 100 years. Many cultures around the world have lost their native tongue - yet many others have been fortunate to survive and have it put to record.

From my perspective, I do see a great people. But like many who are commenting on events or practices, I have great concern for the way in which they are happening and those who are being hurt in the process. I do not have answers for the problems. I can only pray and encourage peace and understanding. I hope that practices do not continue to hurt people as progress is made.

I remember this lesson from when I was a child: "The strongest man is one who admits he is wrong or hurt another. The weakest man is one who does not see his mistakes or listens to the complaints of those he has hurt. The best man is one who fixes his mistakes and changes his ways and makes amends and heals the wounds of those hurt." (even if they were not directly hurt by him but someone else). Again, I do not think it is the success, as the video talks about, that is the issue - but the injustices along the way of progress that are what is being criticized.

That is what I have to say in general. Specifically for you, I ask that peace guide your words and actions so that perhaps you can help be part of any solution. Again, I leave this conversation 'mahaab asalaam'.

The post I made after this one seems to have quieted things down.

Remember, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God."

If one follows a belief system that means 'peace'; then they themselves must be willing to be peacemakers themselves.

That was probably the worst coup in the history of Turkey, unless it was just a show. Turkey does not have a place in EU, hope that European leaders are not stupid enough to let them join.

You mean the same EU leaders that backed Erdogan and condemned the coup? They would be stupid enough to allow Turkey to join, especially after losing the UK. Not that Turkey is interested anymore, but that's beside the point.

All EU leaders certainly hoped Erdogan to be removed and replaced by a more reasonable temporary military administration, but of course in no way they could publicly support a coup. Please, don't tell me you were expecting representatives of democratic countries to actually say "we approve of this coup, go on, we're counting on you!".

They waited as much as they could before condemning it (when it was finally clear it couldn't succeed).

As long as Turkey was interested in joining the EU there was hope on the EU side that it could be shaped in something resembling a democracy, that is no longer the case (with all the actions against journalists and free press, ban on social media, repressing of protests and other anti-democratic behaviours)

Why not? That's exactly what the EU did with Syria. In fact, not only did they publicly support the rebels, but they also provided them with aid, and imposed sanctions on the country, all based on an unconfirmed premise no less. Why couldn't they do the same with Turkey? Could it be that the EU and Turkey are allies with a certain superpower, which worked to destabilize Syria together with them, and so the EU supporting the coup against Erdogan would've been a conflict of interest? I'll let you decide.

Also, EU leaders didn't wait for shit to condemn the coup. Here's an EU statement made less than 3 hours after the coup was confirmed and while it was still ongoing.

Because Turkey is a member of NATO and supposedly a democracy. So it's not a matter of EU and Turkey being allies of some reptilian superpower, EU and Turkey are allies and that's it. Syria has never been a democracy, and people actively opposed the regime, which is not the case with Erdogan (everyone hates him abroad, and most of its educated and pro-western populace hates him as well, but he still has the support of the masses, rural areas and lower class).

Also, half an hour after that statement (supposedly they had better intelligence) coup had already failed, Erdogan was somewhere safe and communicating with the population and the rest of loyalist troups. The coup failed because Erdogan was still alive and free. http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/15/world/live-blog-turkey/index.html#lf-content=168996307:lb-post-9a6b9a7afd0f23d28a47c9ff3656c0b8@livefyre.com

About an hour earlier, people in the streets were already opposing the coup. http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/15/world/live-blog-turkey/index.html#lf-content=168996307:lb-post-4066dd0f4d136715425b34b773552852@livefyre.com

This coup was doomed from the beginning. They failed to imprison pretty much anyone detaining real power (exept a single high official). Airports, state TVs and bridges on Bosphorus aren't important as much as actual people ruling the country.

"Because Turkey is a member of NATO and supposedly a democracy."

Is that how it works? If you're a NATO member you can trump over human rights without having to answer for it?
And I doubt that Turkey calling itself a democracy is relevant to NATO. Consider that Bashar al-Assad was also supposedly elected president, and Donetsk supposedly voted for independence. Unlike Turkey, however, Syria and Russia are not in the big boy club, so it's ok to vilify them. Whether right or wrong, it's hypocritical.

"So it's not a matter of EU and Turkey being allies of some reptilian superpower.."

No, but most EU nations and Turkey are members of NATO, along with the US and Canada, and I don't think I need to point out which one of those is the most influential in world events, do I?

"Syria has never been a democracy, and people actively opposed the regime, which is not the case with Erdogan"

There have been plenty of peaceful protests criticizing the government and Erdogan. Were they not actively opposing the regime since they weren't rioting?

I do agree you that the coup was doomed from the beginning. It started off well, but once the protesters came out, the military was ill equipped to disperse them, which is kind of mind blowing. Did they not see this coming? Did they not think to bring tear gas or something? I don't get it.

Very good opinion, totally agree. The latest religious state was Ottoman Empire than Kemal Atatürk (founder of the Republic of Turkey https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustafa_Kemal_Atatürk) transform the Ottoman Empire into a modern and secular state.
Now Erdogan want to return to a religious state and fight for that.

That was literally the death of democracy in Turkey, even though ironically the people who opposed the military forces were "defending" the democracy. Turkey will now move away from secularism and into an authoritarian muslim state under absolute control of Erdoğan. As a Turk who considers himself a modern, forward thinking and educated person I am really worried about my future in this country. Because pro-Erdoğan supporters are capable of murder, rape and pillage. This is because the majority of these people aren't Turks in the truest sense at all. Erdoğan didn't allow 3 million immigrants into this country out of the kindness of his heart. It was to bolster his supporters and his "soldiers". Now Turkey is filled with Arabs.

There will be purges in every institution of the country even if they are not associated with the latest events. Erdoğan will remove all opposition, place loyalists in the army and the judiciary. Eveything that happens in this country will be to his benefit from now on until the day he dies.

If you are planning to visit this hellhole as a tourist, don't. Go somewhere else. You'll be safer and happier, trust me.

The problem isn't about how many Turks and how many Arabs are in Turkey. The problem is that there are so many people that would gladly get blood on their hands. This is what is troubling me. So, this isn't happening because of the large number of Arabs. This is happening because there's a large number of blindly devoted people that have no morals at all. The problem is that many people love to kill in the name of their country, in the name of their religion, even in the name of PEACE! And don't think that I'm only talking about muslims. We, the Christians, were and still are really violent too.

Remember what John Lennon once said? Imagine there's no countries, it isn't hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for and no religion too. Imagine all the people living life in peace. ;)

I don't know why you are preaching the words of Lennon to me. Words, after all, were not enough to save him from a mentally unstable person. Humans are violent by nature, that will never change. Nor will the borders ever go away, or religious intolerance and racial bias will ever disappear. You can't just close your eyes and expect the world to be a better place.

But I agree with your opinions in the first paragraph. The people who live in Turkey grow up amidst the bloody carnage of religious holidays. During Eid al-Adha they will slaughter cattle and sheep on the streets because of religious nonsense and in the wake of such slaughter cities, town and villages will usually be painted with blood in a metaphorical sense. So these people are not averse to blood. Yet they are also weak. Weak in mind and lacking moral compass, they follow the words of their great leader like cattle. Unfortunately for them, this man is also systematically destroying their future and the future of their children.

I mentioned the Arabs for a reason. There are certain elements within Turkey. Elements that integrate themselves within protesting crowds for the purpose of riling them up and creating scuffles between the protesters, the police and the army. These people are recruited from within the ranks of terrorist groups like ISIS and Al-Qaeda because they specialize in social engineering and urban warfare. Ten years ago you would never hear anyone chanting "Allahu Akbar" outside of a mosque. Now they are chanting it on the streets.

Anyway, I highly recommend this article to understand what really happened and what it all means for the future of Turkey - http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/18/opinion/turkeys-coup-that-wasnt.html

About the fifth, the first photo is being said that it's from Egypt, the second from Morocco on 2015, the third Egypt on 2011, and the fourth from Korea on 2015.

Sorry, after your reply I looked all, I was talking about only for first(probably this is third one from 2006). I don't know all of them and they might be fake or not. Also there is even one photo people claim to rescue one soldier posted as they are beating him. So I don't trust pictures much. But I don't understand where this rage comes from. In one video a person begging to let them hit a corpse of the soldier. People think now they defended country from a coup with torturing soldiers in mosques. Some of the captives said superiors called them for practice. And they tortured and killed this people with their own hands. I know media always isn't reliable but seeing what the actual people write made me really scared about this country's future.

i don't get the point of "x country y year not turkey" photos. it's very obvious they're not from turkey. especially the egypt one, but either way what difference does it make?

i saw denald donald trump's tweet before. funny guy. #MakeTrollingGreatAgain. but... what the hell does that tweet have to do with anything?

and of course, the beheading. let's say it was a lie. does it justify anything? the guy in this NSFW video is yelling "we killed four of them. it's fifth one's turn. [...] let me kick him once for allah's sake." can you spot the 7 differences between isis and these guys? i know i can't.

edit: i just googled that news article about military vehicle crash. i can't see that photo on there. is there something wrong with my browser?

1) duh. it's a random photo of a random soldier, not even a beheaded body. anyone can put anyone's photo on facebook or whatever, and claim he is dead.
2) i never saw this one and there is nothing turkish or english written on it, so i frankly don't give a damn.
3) so the photo that would debunk a very serious claim is recently removed. how convenient. (although i should add that apparently an official announced there haven't been a beheaded body discovered.)
4) read his retweets. even funnier than denald donald himself.
5) like i said, what difference does it make? oh, of course. there were turkish tanks on the streets instead of egyptian tanks. good to know.

Based on the info we currently have, this thing is obviously a legit coup that started as an "Egypt" but ended up becoming a "Stauffenberg" mixed with "SCSE 1991".

1)Troops landed in Marmaris to kill (or arrest) Erdo, but failed because he bolted a few minutes before they arrived.Later 2 fighters had the chance to blew his plane out of the skies but didn't take the chance. It also looks like someone was supposed to bomb him at the airport,(hence the explosion everyone heard) but even that didn't work.
2)The generals that were supposedly "held hostage" are presumably the true masterminds of the coup. The plan was fairly straightforward-take out Erdogan, his supporters, take control of the capital and Constantinople.Nothing too complicated for the army, really.
3)However,things apparently went to shit since they couldn't kill Erdo.It looks like the top dogs got cold feet after that and turned themselves into "hostages",while pretty much leaving their troops to fend for themselves, which led to the utter collapse of the whole coup.Idiots.
4)Obviously,because of their cowardice, the current Great Fucking Purge happened. Most of the military high command is now in chains along with thousands of their troops. What should have been the Liberation of Turkey from neo-ottoman grip ended in an utterly shameful defeat due to treason and stupidity.

So yeah, the military got rekt,Erdo's supporters won and shit is going to get a lot worse now that the last check of Erdogan's power has been put down.

P.S.:Also,Greece apparently gave the poor bastards that escaped their way back to the ottomans. They might have just as well blew their brains out and spared them the "pleasure" of having a very physical "chat" with imperial intelligence.

I still believe that this coup was created by Erdogan and the low rank soldiers had no idea what was going on. That's just my opinion though. Now he accuses anyone he wants and puts them into jail. Plus, if he'll bring back the death penalty, he'll just kill anyone he wants. Dark times are coming.
Now, about Greece, which is my country, well, they shit bricks about anything, so they wouldn't even consider to keep the so called traitors. Our politicians are all corrupt and cowards.

It reeks of a setup. What better way to ensure complete control than to have a failed coup which so happens to fail at every single task they set out to do. The end result being murder squads going after everyone not even participating in the coup, is also suspect.

Of course they had no idea,as the military hadn't even been fully mobilized and the necessary orders were left unsent. At least 1 full army (2nd) and a sick amount of brigades and regiments were supposed to get the "now or never" orders and go in,guns blazing.
Also, the whole "we thought that this was a military exercise" excuse can also be a last ditch effort by the coup commanders to try and save as many troops as they can in case of a fail.

Whether or not it was legit (I'm pretty sure it was, though I'm not ruling out the possibility that the top officers "cowardice" was actually outright treason of their own men on Erdo's orders),the scale of this catastrophy is insane. The military is effectively out of the game and the massive cleansing of dissent and anti-ottoman elements has begun.

My condolences about your gov's outright betrayal.Pretty much everyone hoped that Tsipras would evacuate the country the hell out of the Fourth Reich, but apparently him and Merkel got scared shitless by the EU's personal "battle pshek" Donald Tusk.

Why would you bomb the parliament and miss ( yea right ), when you can storm it and kill every single politician? That's how a coup looks like.. Why to fly behind Erdogan's plain and not shoot it down if it was for real? They didn't even try, it failed before it even started, that's how fake it was.
