When a developer puts his hard work into a game to only get negativity towards it in painfull forms, its a shame that people have to be this way, and those who reacted in "unneeded" harmfull ways should be ashamed of themselfs. (and no it's not normal criticism anymore)
Sadly this doesn't justify the reaction of the developer either.

No, i own only good games.

Yeah, a game developer whose "life doesn't revolve around mere videogames" will never make a decent game.

I think that the reason is not critics, but new refunding feature. If it's works like refunding in AppStore and Google Play (the developer returns full price, the store keeps it's cut - the reason is that they have expenses for keep item in shop, download trafic, bank transfers and etc... and they are not responsible for developers fails... also developers are more careful what they relise and quality is better), then developer can lose a lot of money... and this can make him very angry... He made a bad game to milk the community, but now the comunity strikes back :)

I agree with him. The Steam community is full of entitled children. If a game is not perfect in every possible way then the community will bash it until the developers give them what they want to quiet them down, or the developer either abandons the game or removes it.

A good example of how bad the community would be these threads. The developer had enough and shut the game down but instead of letting it be the community shifts into this uproar of thread posting and makes a thousand threads of the same topic to continue bashing a game that is now gone.

I feel sorry mostly for the people who obtain games from bundles and still have the balls to bash the game in forums knowing they payed a whole 10-20 cents for it, and they probably didn't even buy the bundle for that specific game in the first place.

I will agree that some developers are just in it for the money but it doesn't change the fact that they are still normal people with a day job like some of us here. How would you like to get yelled at and name called all day long by the public while you worked? After a while you would get sick of it and quit your job.

You can go right now to ANY game forum on Steam and you will see nothing but threads about people complaining. Even if the game has great reviews people will find something to hate on. I think forums for free 2 play games are the worst because you'll find 200+ threads saying the game is "pay 2 win" (I hate that term the most). People with 0.1 hours on record complain the most about games from what I have learned.

Bottom line is, if the community was positive and patient chances are the developer will be too. But good luck ever getting the Steam community to do that. People need to learn that most of us are like mirrors, if you give us the finger we'll give the finger right back but if you put on a smile then we also smile right back.

There's a Difference Between Criticism and Bullying
if you are a game developer you better accept people opinions on your game and learn from it, you are making money out of it so have some decency and be professional about it, acting like a child is what got him where he is now, it doesnt matter how loud the community got, no point in blaming them at this point

If the community was positive and patient all the time, chances are we would get more games like this, where developers put no effort into it, just to make a quick buck,

The cummunity are assholes and the developers cannot take critism,
Even tough its unkind and unnice how his game is being handled, he reacts in the wrong way.

Plus he is far more interesting then the community, thats why i prefer talking about him.
Sure the community is loud and sort of an hive mind when it come to this things...but most of them are kids.
This guy on the other hand, is 40+
There are so many things i cant understand, i mean how can a grown man react like this after being criticized, this is a normal thing in life, im half his age and i have already experienced similar situations.
then he pulled a uwe boll on everyone, going as far as too say people are responsible for the game bad reputation, because they expect to much from games that should be nothing more then a mere time waster, proving that he never had any intention of even trying to make an actual game, i think deep down he knows the game was really bad.
He even used this as a publicity stunt for his website... this guy is quite something

I agree as well about the general community. However I doubt it would have had as much of a stir as it did if the developer hadn't of posted a picture of a pile of crap and threw a temper tantrum. If he had just removed the game from Steam without his rant it would have just quietly disappeared.

Hello everyone,

Someone from our audience pointed me here.
I own and operate DailyIndieGame (where Dark Base 01 is currently bundled) and also I am an indie developer who has games published on STEAM before the whole Greenlight thing (when you actually had to deliver quaity and proven games).

I usually spend time around communities so here is my 2 cents on this.

  • One line comments like: "this sucks" and a downvote is in no way criticism. Personally I never liked GTA. Would I bash that game? Absolutely not. It's a great game but it's just not my kind of game.

  • As for taking criticism, one thing I always did with my games is to gather a community of trusted fans and release them early builds to play as we develop. Kind of like Early Access, but we were doing this 10 years ago. Most of those people are still around for over 10 years now.

I will never be able to to make our games and products satisfy everyone's wishes, but I will do my best.

When we opened DailyIndieGame we got a chance to see how it is on the other side of the fence. Being a publisher.

A lot of people come to make games for money and fame. I always get these questions: How much money did you make?
Whatever happened to making games for the love of it?

When we released our games on STEAM, I think STEAM was about 4 times smaller in terms of users than today.
And we made 20x time more money in our first month than the average new indie release does now, on a 4-5 times bigger market.
Quality must have gone down a lot since then.

Quality has been going down since the start of 2000.
Even so what happed to him was unkind and such, and he doesnt deserver 90% of the hate he gets, he still shoudnt have reacted the way he did.
Its a state of position you are in.

Game engines are cheap and plenty now which lowers the bar considerably for developers to throw a game together and toss it on Greenlight. Ten years ago you pretty much had to make a game from scratch. Now you can basically drag-n-drop assets and you have a finished game. The resulting games look like a college game programming project that somebody did an hour before it was due. It sucks to hear something you create is hated by others so I can understand his reaction, but reacting harshly to criticism isn't the appropriate response...ever. The proper response would be what the Orion: Prelude devs did..ask for input and fix the game.

I use Unity3D for developing one of our next games.
Try making a railroad in a huge open world which perfectly follows the terrain at any angle/curve/etc :)

It's easier to make games. But also for some of us with experience, we can push the bar even higher.

Comment has been collapsed.

People who release games that get slammed aren't making games that require skill. The Unity Asset store is the primary cause of the new gaming community drama. The more effort somebody puts into their game the more it shows. If a game is frustrating to play then it defeats the purpose of playing a game. They don't want to spend their free-time troubleshooting a game. People want instant gratification, which is why these clicker games are so popular.

Good luck on the new game..hopefully it involves hacking trains ;)

Some idiot made a shitty game and now he's mad because people don't like it? I'm so happy refund system finally works, people can refund shitty games. I don't understand people who buy such games. Yeah if you got it from the bundle or if you're a game collector it's understandable, but why people are buying it directly from steam?

To all game developer take him as a example. Don't complain about the community and just improved your game.

I don't get it, he removed the game from the store to not see more reviews there. But in theory people who purchased it, can still play the last version, or the dev can completely remove it without compensation to owners???
In the other hand there are tons of other sites where anyone can review the game, and of course metacrituc...
Alsi the entire market press will make fun of the dev. So where's the point???

He basically /ragequit his job. He renamed the game to annoy the owners and removed the storefront so nobody can purchase it. If you have a Steam key for the game it would still be redeemable regardless.

And reviews still there. So he didn't even achieve to delete them or impede people create new ones and read all the crap and jokes about his game...
A mature dev would fix/improve the game so future reviews improve and also current ones can change. He seems the most immature. Most of the gamers don't want to own a bad game, they rather it becomes good than having to do jokes about it to get sonehow the entertainment they expected out of the product.

Hmm, game gives an Uncaught node.js Error now for me, it was working fine the other day. Wonder if it had a trashing patch sent to it, or if this old machine just can't run it right (not my personal computer). I'll have to check when I get home again.

One ideea I had, (and I will forward it to Valve) is to allow people to vote for a Greenlight game only if they played it for at least 30 minutes.
This would however involve the Greenlight games being available through the STEAM client.

That should solve 99% of problems.

Better yet, earn some kind of unique "End of Demo" achievement to be able to vote so that they know it was played and not just idled for 30 minutes.
