I am in the exact same spot as vcv8, though I can word it.
I found the pacing excruciating - turns were taking way too long to resolve, naval battles shouldn't be here in first place - and the pathfinding during siege battles was just pathetic.
While the settng was praised in many reviews, I found no sense of Japanese history and thought the art, especially on the audio front, was just really cliche and bad.
To each his own, but looking back, I didn't know squat about imperial Roman history and enjoyed Rome Total War the most, so maybe not knowing the setting is the prerequisite to enjoy a Total War game - pick accordingly!

Well, Shogun 2 has achievements while Fall of the Samurai doesn't... I haven't actually played them to say anything about the gameplay but it can't be too different, considering they're both strategy games and one is like an expansion of the other...

Yup, FOTS has achievements, i don't know what kind that dude is smoking. All the gold coin achievements, are for FOTS.
As far as which game. Hard to say, i liked them both. FOTS if you want to play into the whole traditional vs new age thing. It's fun to shred armies with the Gatling guns. Only down side is it downloads Shogun 2. So the game is like 30GB, even though it's "Stand alone" If you decide to get Shogun2 later on, the game is already on your PC, it just unlocks the campaign.

It really depends. I think FoTS is more refined but its also harder IMO. Shogun 2 is really easy if you have a lot of archers since you can capture any city without losing like any guys.

I'd say go first for Shogun 2, as FoTS is a bit harder if you've never played any of the games in the saga before.
