Fo real. I've been playing Resident Evil 5 with a friend and when we got to the end, we both wanted to stop playing cause of how ridiculous the QTEs were getting. I give the game a 7/10, but if you took out the QTEs I'd easily give it an 8.5/10. My biggest issue with the QTEs in the game, aside from the fact that they existed, was the fact that F + V was one of the key combinations for that. Who in the hell thought that was even remotely okay?

Do you hate QTEs?

Depends on the game, some actually use them well!

I remember playing Far Cry 3 and hated the QTE... Made the climax of the game not so much of a climax ;__; Plus Dying Light has a QTE and that put me off buying it... That and I watched majority of the game xD

Edit: They are okay during the game I guess but as a boss fight etc... NO WAY

I stopped playing Resident Evil 4 because of that. Keyboard is probably not the best pad simulator xD (other thing is how could they convert game to PC without implementing mouse controls).

Exactly. While I still hate them, they're a bit easier with a controller cause controller buttons are color coded, while on a keyboard, you have to actually read the keys it puts up.

It makes you wonder if Shenmue really holds up or not.

Nah, I played the first one recently and, while it was pretty incredible back in the day, it hasn't aged very well.

That said, I'm still excited for Shenmue 3.

Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit had only QTEs but, ihmo, it was good. So, I guess it depends on the game?

Playing Resident Evil 5 with a friend too, and we are suffering a lot with that F + V crap, and we didn't even reached the end...
Wonder how much time we will get stuck there before breaking the keyboard. xD

A quick tip that helped my friend and I a lot. You can rebind the F and V keys to make them less stupid. When looking online for some advice I found someone that mentioned it.

We changed it F>E and V>Q.

It was a bit awkward at first, since we played the whole game with the controls how they were, but after getting used to them, even disregarding the QTEs, they felt much more natural.

Thanks for the tip, didn't know it was possible to do that. I'm sure it will help us a lot!
Thanks again =D

You're very welcome! Hopefully you aren't too far into it, cause changing the controls like that just does feel so much more natural, and I wish we had done it early on rather than right at the end.

I knew this thread was going to be about RE5 before I even opened it :)

Definitely. I have several other complaints about the game, bosses in particular, but the QTEs easily take the cake and damn near ruined the game for us.

Hell, we were almost going to say "hell with it" to Resident Evil 6 until I found a thing that said it has something that more or less takes care of QTEs for you.

Some QTEs are not that bad. Resident Evil ones are bad, because you fail instantly if you mess up.

Definitely. I forget which game it was, but there was a game I played several years ago that did QTEs pretty well. Basically it would have QTEs and if you got them you'd get some kind of bonus, but if you failed it didn't affect you negatively. If a game is gonna have QTEs, it needs to have them like that.

Hell, I stopped playing Tomb Raider because of one point where I was constantly having to restart a scene due to failing QTEs.

QTEs often make me feel that I'm not in control of the character, which takes away from the experience for me. I also hate when the cutscenes transition into QTEs causing my death because I was not prepared for sudden mindless buttonmashing. (Tomb Raider 2013) Also this:

Yeah, at the end of RE5 there's a cutscene that's actually really interesting, and then boom, ded cause my hand was off the keyboard cause I was watching the damn cutscene.

To make it even worse, several QTEs later we had to completely redo the scene because I messed up the last one of the scene.

That's my biggest issue with cutscene QTEs also, they completely remove you from the cutscene. That scene went from "Ooo, this is a pretty cool scene" to "Oh god fuck the scene I have to state intently at this spot to not miss these damn buttons."

I especially hate them in non-action game.

I'm playing a laid back game, and suddenly I have to quickly press certain buttons in a certain pattern? GTFO

Heh, be like Until Dawn.

I watched Markiplier play the game, and while it was a very enjoyable time, the entire time I thought to myself "Damn, I'm glad I didn't buy this game cause I would have hated playing it.".

I enjoy a good story based game. I even enjoy games that are light on gameplay, To the Moon, for example, is one of my favorite games. One thing I'll never enjoy though, is a story based game that substitues QTEs for gameplay.

I'll pass. As much as we enjoyed the game overall, the QTEs made it so it's one we'll likely never revisit.

Heck, the QTEs were so bad we almost didn't want to even bother with Resident Evil 6. The only saving grace is that I happened to find a thing that mentioned RE6 having some kind of QTE assist thing that supposedly makes it much less bull.

RE6 has a couple of qte but they are a lot easier and as you said there's some kind of assist but I don't remember exactly, in my case I didn't enjoy Re6 too much :D

Re4 has annoying qtes as well, especially in a particular battle at about the end of the game.

I've never actually played RE4 myself. I get scared too easily to play a horror game by myself, but I watched my brother play the whole game and I enjoyed it.

Though, he's actually good at QTEs, I think he only failed a couple times that I can remember.

The ps2 lagging a bit in loading qte didn't not help either :D

Hmm, how about something like the old arcade game Dragon's Lair, whole thing was one big QTE... :) Fortunately I could never afford to play it... :)

At least Dragon's Lair was entertaining in that it was actually pretty enjoyable to see the many ways the game would kill you.

That said, I hate that game.

Aha, I have a memory of watching someone finish that game, but it's such an old memory I wonder if it's not my imagination... :) Guess youtube would have it, should check... :)

Oh, hmmm, seems it wasn't my imagination, interesting... :)

Only played like 20 minutes of Tomb Raider thanks to them. Got to the first QTE, thought I'd give the game a chance, and then another 3 appeared less than 10 minutes later. NOPE.

It's a shame because, like Resident Evil 5, it's a very enjoyable game outside of the QTEs.

Yeah, Tomb Raider played very nicely. I wish I could've played more, but I dislike QTEs even if they provide some player input for cinematic scenes that would otherwise just be mini cutscenes.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Bleh, I especially despise QTEs that exist to add player input to cutscenes.

It's a cutscene, I want to watch it, I don't want to have to scan the screen for button prompts because that completely removes me from the scene.

The only QTE I've ever liked was the one during the Dracula cutscene in I Wanna Be The Guy.

I agree they take some of the technical skill out of games. Sort of like lazy combat. Even in cutscenes I just wanna chill and watch the cutscene, not hover over my keyboard and half-ignore the action.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Exactly.

Near the end of RE5 was a pretty interesting cutscene. Too bad I died immediately cause I was, you know, watching the cutscene with my hand off my keyboard.

Then I got to proceed to not enjoy the cutscene at all because of having to stare at the spot for QTE prompts.

Funny enough i barely have any games but Shemue with QTE's in mind - and i loved those,
likely since those games with QTE's are the ones i haven't played (yet, or will ever).

It really depends on which game we're talking about. I hated them on God of War (Which is the reason I've never beaten any game in the franchise), but I loved them in Resident Evil 6.

I can't really think of any other examples right now. I think they can be a good thing if they're well done.
