Thankfully (because I do want a DG2), it seems to be trending towards the one million mark now. Last night it was around the 650K level, and this morning around the 750K level.
I don't pretend to know what kind of budget Hidden Path has to work with already, so I can't comment on that whole aspect (although it's funny how people bring up CS:GO... since... isn't that still free so far?). If I hadn't gotten the original DG so cheap, I doubt I'd go for one of the higher tiers, but since I did get it cheap, and since I've gotten a lot of rather good gaming out of it -- every gold on every level except the You Monster campaign (that's next) -- I'm okay with the backing amount here... if DG2 happens.

Does this trend analysis take into account that all projects get most of their money the first day or first days and perhaps a peak at the end with a lot less in all the time inbetween?

No. The site itself has a link inside the "Trending Toward" box explaining exactly that.

Ah, I didn't see that, thanks. Well, since the trend of the first days is showing barely $1,000,000 and it will probably get much lower in the following days, I fear $1,000,000 won't be reached. Which I'd find really really sad, cause I really want Defense Grid 2. This needs way more hype.

Btw. Hidden Path Entertainment will offer the possibility to support the project through Paypal when they reach the $250,000 goal. Why only then? Because then it would be clear that they'd get the funds collected through Kickstarter. If you could pay through Paypal and then the project would not be funded at all, they'd have to pay back everything that they got through Paypal if that was even possible.

Frictional developed Amnesia with ~$600,000 and they too created a new engine for it. If Hidden Path really needs $1,000,000 to develop this tower defense game, AS AN INDIE TEAM, they are doing it wrong. VERY WRONG.

However, i suspect they just jumped on the Kickstarter bandwagon: "Hey, easy money. Let's just tell them we can't give them Defense Grid 2 if we don't have a budget of $1,000,000."

The kickstarter, for me, felt fair. Though I can understand why some people would feel cheated that they only have the $250.000 goal get people an expansion for the original game and not Defense Grid 2, I still thought it was a valid kickstarter project, since the stretch goals were laid out in advance and Hidden Path did give decent explanations for why it was set up in such a way.

However, some folks pointed out other things... such as the ads for AMD and Razer.

Which leads me to another thing: Yesterday, Hidden Path updated the game... with ads, both for the Kickstarter (now with promiment Razer and AMD logos) and also a contest, where you can submit your email address and in turn you might win an AMD 6770 graphics card (also, AMD and Razer get to spam you).

Suddenly this is not sounding quite as good.

The deal for two Radeon 6770 cards for $106 was sweet (but just looked and it sold out).
