Maybe I didn't go back far enough into the Forum topics, but I didn't see this posted yet.

I hosted a giveaway of Half-Life 2 (of which I have many more copies left over), and promptly delivered the gift to the appropriate winner. However, later today I randomly decided to look up the individual on Steam, only to find he already owns HL2... and has logged almost 30 hours playing it as well as the two episodes.

This is pretty aggravating for me. Here I am, trying to gift a fresh experience to someone only to find greedy, gimme-gimme jerks. I mean, sure, HL2 isn't exactly a rare game or anything, but is there any official way to deal with this? I'm willing to show the last winner's account to an admin/moderator if he/she wants to take action against this person in any way; I would prefer it if a person in authority took action against such behavior.

I'll definitely be less inclined to use this site if I'm likely to end up giving away games to people who already own them.

Irrelevant sidenote- I think the points system is a pretty good idea.

EDIT- Oh god database failure. If I posted this a bunch of times on accident, I promise to remove all of the other ones

Don't send it to them. Look at the winners' library before sending, if they have it, refuse to send it to them.

We keep meeting like this

That's pretty much what I plan on doing, I just wanted clarification to see if there are any codified rules etc. I sure hope there's some way to prevent this in the future without having to manually investigate

What if the winner set his/her profile private and refuse to make it public?
Is the gifter obligated to gift the winner in such circumstance or the gifter can back off on gifting?

I would say that if the giftee refuses to make their profile public to receive a free game, than the gifter should be able to decline to send it to them.

Ahh, I don't know, if people want their profile private I am inclined to just respect that and give them the benefit of the doubt. It's really sad that people are trying to abuse the system though. Speaking of which, not gifting the game initiates a ban for the gifter right? So what if someone won a game that they had already, didn't receive the game (because they were caught), but still left negative feedback? That'd be terrible, but hopefully fixable.

Leave it up to the gifter. If they want to gift someone blindly, more power to them. But it hurts the whole community if gifters give things to people who already have them.

Yeah, I'm just getting kind of bummed that this is even going on I think. It's really lame that people are doing it. I don't have any better ideas though.

the profiles should be public to enter the giveaways

my understanding is the site picks someone automatically, so if someone wins and you refuse to give them the gift, then i dont think you have the option to pick someone else.

I'm guessing you would just start a new one in that case.

Hopefully the point system sorts out this issue, since I imagine people will not waste points on games they already own. When the site first opened, that system was not in place, and we ended up in this situation. I completely understand where you're coming from, it's great to give a gift to someone who's looking forward to a game they haven't yet had the opportunity to play. Did the user in question already redeem the gift? If not, or if the problem comes up again, let me know, and I'll flag the giveaway to select another winner.

But does the point system punish legitimate users more than it dissuades the cheapskates? I think a simple and easy way of doing it would be a game check, based on a public profile. I understand the privacy issue, and respect it, but this is a public place, where you are part of a public community, so people should have to deal with it if they want to enter giveaways.

Hey CG, one of my giveaway's could do with another winner selecting. I fired off emails to the link at the bottom of the site; I'm guessing you've been too busy to check them, or the emails haven't gone through. I'll try catch you on Steam tonight if you hadn't gotten them.

Thanks for the response

The user did redeem the gift, but I have their account name/profile page if you want to flag him/her. Is there any good way for me to message them to you?

Me too bruh. I think it would be better if they enforced an "all-public profile" rule so we could check to see if winners do/don't own the giveaway game

Or, better yet, make it impossible to enter if you already own the game

not sending the gift would make negative rep on the profile page -.-

I don't care about negative rep from scumbags who enter giveaways for games they already own. Their opinion does not matter to me.

All I care about is giving out games for free to people who have never played them, gifting hours of new entertainment and unique fun.
