thats a common idea and it can look partly true sadly but there are always inconvenients with dating websites and yes there would be a lot of flaws.
But if people date on political ideas religions,etc, "moral values,ethics", etci dont see why video games could be a standard, the same way there ar epeople who only date with persons who want to travel a lot, enjoy a specific hobby,etc. Video games wouldnt be everything but more some sort of "opportunity makers", like you say to someone "hey i like this game too" and then conversations continues and has a result, or no results,etc.

You basically provided reasoning for why this would be a good idea. People who are deep into games are unlikely to have any success at a general dating site, so a dating site based on their main passion is more likely to get them in touch with compatible people.

Other people seem right to say that if you set it up like SG but with fewer requirements for signup then it would indeed lead to chaos. But the part I think is intriguing is the idea of data mining all the information provided by Steam profiles for purposes of creating dating matches. I'd be interested to know: can you actually glean information important to compatibility this way? Is sharing some major videogame enthusiasms a feature which makes a relationship measurably more likely to succeed?

To be honest I really like your idea. I enjoy video games a lot so to have a "healthy romantic" life my other half as to at least play something with me, to my knowledge there's no site/forum that allows me to search for women that play "true" video games (which means no mobile nor just playing sims/fifa/COD, i need my partner to be open minded about several different genres).
The reason I say that my partner needs to play video games is because i don't want to choose between playing X game and spending time with them; i know how much i like video games so when games like total war come out I might not make the "right" decision. If my partner likes video games we then can both look forward to these games and enjoy the time we play them. If my partner just "tolerates" my hobby i feel that we would grow apart because she might feel that I don't love her enough because sometimes i would "choose" video games above her; I don't think it's fair to make someone feel like that so,right now, i'd only consider dating women that play video games.
Luckily I currently have a GF that does enjoy playing with me so i never dabbled in those dating sites, being in Portugal also kind sucks because "gamers" are a relatively rare breed (from all my school life i only met 2 women and around 10 men that play video games).

The people running Steam have no experience running a dating app. There's no way I would expect them to do it well. And, their platform is made up of mixed ages - so you'd have to begin by segregating the user base and adding additional verifications. Plus, Steam is worldwide. You'd need to segregate it by country - learn to fit in with each country's laws, etc., etc., etc.
Crazy bad idea.
Much better idea: Get on an existing dating app and talk about what games you love. See if that attracts anybody.

Not really. Other sites cater to a certain clientele, but don't really handle well outside of their one design focus. OKCupid, for example, is a casual option, but allows a ton of control of the body of the profile. JDate, on the other hand, has some handy controlled fields that make managing the data easier, but are more controlled.
Now, a dating site that lets you see how many hours a given individual has put into, say, their top 5 games and quick links to what they are may help you understand how much free time they have (super useful).
That's not to say that the platform wouldn't be abused....

Hello my idea is gonna look weird but i was wondering if cg had ever thought about a website using a part of SG code where people could date based on their steam accounts. There would be an account value entry(the same as the one needed to join Steamgifts) to limit the risks of abuse, but no real sort of contributor value.
Steamgifts can detect which game you have so we can imagine a system where you could look for people having same games as you for example, or a quizz where you write which are your favourite games/kindof games. This new website brother of SG and Strades could also be used to make new friends too. With millions of users from Steamgifts the possibilities would be numerous. Of course the system would have its limits as with all dating websites, but it would be an opportunity to date people who share the same hobby as you,video games. The staff would be the same as the one used for Steamgifts, and would be allowed to participate.
