After exploring the site for about a week, I finally decided to make a giveaway. It's more fun than I expected it to be! I just made a giveaway for a game I've had sitting in my inventory for ages, a prize from the Christmas event, but I kind of like the idea of utilizing the site to share indie games that I enjoy that some people might not be aware of, like Dungeons of Dredmor or Recettear.

For those of you that have been around for awhile, made a few giveaways, how do you decide what to give away? Is it just stuff you happen across and don't want? Do you buy keys for games you enjoy and want to share? What game would you most like to give away, cost aside?

Hi, I am also new here and still looking around and haven't made any giveaway yet (will do after my exams). I already have a few ideas. I want to pick games that I don't see here very often and I find them very enjoyable. (Psychonauts, Beyond Good & Evil, etc.)
Let's put it this way: the games I have already played and consider them really good :)
EDIT: and I will definitely make a puzzle

This.

Also if I see something new come out that's interestingish I'll buy that and give it away. I also try to do giveaways that are uncommon on this site.

Oh, I also really like how this site is introducing me to cool games I didn't know about! I will usually check out the steam page for a game that I haven't heard of, and a lot of times end up reading about something that sounds awesome.

I don't know if I can make any puzzles. I can never solve them either. >.<

And yeah, I get the spare stuff bit. I won the sega genesis collection at christmas time and it's just been wasting away because I absolutely would never play or have ever been interested in playing sega games. I just never had one growing up. I'm sure someone is interested but I never did find them, so I'm glad I found this site!

I buy a second copy of whatever game in sale that I liked / would like to have. They sit in my inventory for a while, I check wishlists of close friends, and if no one wants it, I give it away to my groups.

Exactly what you said.

Groups are something I'm still curious about. I don't really know how to join them or where to find them. I guess it's a result of mostly playing single player games and not really being exposed to a lot of the steam community outside of my RL friends. Certainly is a neat idea though.

Some groups that do giveaways are based around extraneous communities (from websites, communities from certain games, etc). Quite a few come from Steamgifts though, a great place to find groups is S.Gifts chat (which you can find from the home page - at the very bottom of the page underneath Extras) and these forums.

I give away games I either really liked or think could use more exposure. I gave away the Broken Sword pack without having played my own copy yet, just because I read some old reviews and felt like it should get a second chance to be noticed. All the other games I've given away (both here and elsewhere) were things I personally enjoyed and felt like sharing with others.

Sometimes it's stuff on sale, sometimes new stuff I just found, sometimes just stuff I like. If it meets more than one of these criteria, so much the better.

Sales, things you love, or things other people want.

I try to make giveaways of games that people will want to play. It gets aggravating when people dont even try out the game they are given, its just another book in their library.

Either best deal available for my current budget, or top site wishlist, also for my budget

But now I'm not so sure how often that wishlist is refreshed...
For instance... Darksiders II shows up as "Not Yet Gifted" and I have won it, but on the other hand hard to believe nobody has it on their wishlist

I had no idea there was a wishlist filter thing here! That's pretty neat, thanks.

its better to give games that you like as you said there are many games that people are not aware of, Recettear is such an awesome game and i've never seen much people playing it, if you got something you dont want sure put it up on giveaway but if you want buy something and giveaway choose your favourite games

I used to buy games to give away before I even knew of Steam Gifts. These were typically games I enjoyed myself and were discounted 80% or more at one point. I didn't have a good venue to give them away, so while I gave a couple on my Facebook page and blog I still had quite a few in my inventory. I gave away most of these here. After I discovered Steam Gifts I bought some games at a lesser discount, though I still mostly buy heavily discounted games. I typically buy either cheap stuff (DLC's, indie bundles) or (more rarely) games which are somewhat high profile and hopefully desirable. I even made a thread to ask what people want (and some others here have had their own threads on this subject). I don't consider myself a heavy gifter though.

I haven't yet given away a game which I got for free (i.e., I paid something for every game I gave away). Lucid is probably the first key I might have given away due to having a spare, but that's currently forbidden. On the other hand I gave away games that I don't have in my own games library. Some games I have for gifting are actually games I would probably enjoy playing if I owned them, but since I hardly play any games I think it's better that I give them away.

That's a pretty interesting concept. I find I have less and less time to play games (it's tragic, I know). The idea of just extending that chance to someone else is neat.

When I get a game from the deal of the day, I sometime buy an extra giftable copy. It allows me to gift it later on to someone who didn't get in on the sale and I'm not breaking the bank. If buying a game specifically for the giveaway, I'd go with something I like and would like to share with others. Of course you can always go with the wishlist to know what people wants the most.

I notice a lot of people just buy extras when they're on sale. I've been a poor student for such a long time now, I have a hard time understanding this concept, I guess. I'm surprised so many people can be that generous! Of course, I was there once too, and will be again soon. Last semester of school + just started a full time job, yay! :D I too will be able to buy extra games just because they're good and worth sharing. ^_^

Look at bank account > Realize I have no money as per usual > Choose one of the following:

  1. Wait for sale
  2. Filter under $20 and look for random game that seems interesting to you, let someone else be your test candidate to see if it's worth buying for yourself.
  3. Search for past indie favourites and pick it.

Buy game, pick group to gift to. Submit gift.
