First and foremost I've got to say that Valve is by far the worst company I ever encountered.

Now to the point. I had mobile authenticator but I don't have access to that number anymore. I contacted support and after 3 days they replied (what a surprise right?) and I got it removed.
Now I added a new phone number went through the process of re enabling the Mobile Authenticator and the shit stuck. After I added the PIN that was sent to my mobile it just stuck without showing me the Recovery code and now that I try to check what the damn Recovery code is, all it shows me is a black box.

Long story short, I ended up with a Mobile Authenticator yet I can't generate Codes (for the login) and without a Recovery Code. Anyone had similar issue and knows a way to fix it?

Yeah my son went through that, its just sit and wait for Steam support. Believe it or not their customer support is much better than it used to be.
Good luck :/

What's sad is It was excellent years ago. They used to respond within a few hours.

That happened to me. I had to reboot my android tablet and ask for another recovery code and start again and I got blocked from trading for an extra seven days. Yeah, I was annoyed too.

Just use WinAuth so you can generate codes and confirm trades on PC.

I know I can, that's not the point of my thread. I just wanted to try the app on the phone as bought a new one a couple of days ago.

The worst? The absolute worst company you have ever encountered?

Believe it or not, I'd say yes. At least it sure is the one that frustrates me more than any other ever did. :D

At least the worst "support" I've encountered.

yes, that's why we keep using their client, buying games for their platform and winning free stuff here so we can activate even more stuff on steam

Well… honestly, what's the alternative? Many PC games are still Steam-exclusive. It's like how one can bitch about how shit Xbox's software is, but if they want to play, for example, Halo or Gears of War, they need to play it there. Or like how people can complain about the strict approach of Nintendo towards using their stuff in online content making, but if you want to play them pokémons, to Nintendo you go.

Exactly this. Steam has the monopoly and no other competitor even gets close to it. That is the first reason for which I believe they stopped caring about the community. It's not like you have an alternative that could provide the same features.

Well, not fully. Plus it requires using several similar services, instead of the comfort of just one. Origin is a good platform (would be better if EA would expand its library beyond its own, but I doubt it would be financially advantageous for them in the long run), GOG is an even better one, and there are great indie platforms like itch.io or Big Fish Games… But their product catalogue pales compared to Steam. (Although BFG has an incredibly large casual game selection.)

I really can't compare Steam to any of the rest as I use none of them. However, I can say that other platforms lack the amount of games that Steam offers and that is a big hit to their business. All I wish is for Valve to step up their game and start caring for the damn community. Now that Steam is growing more and more they need to act professionally, something that many times they refuse to do.

I would like the opposite: their monopoly broken.
I have already diversified my gaming catalogue among two main (Steam, GOG) and several other smaller (Origin, BFG, TellTale) accounts, and would love to see a similar competition among these, like how some countries have a healthy competition among mobile service providers (unless they form a secret cartel, but that is another question). Still, as long as Steam is bigger than everyone else combined, that will be a really difficult-to-reach state.

I get what your saying, and see the validity there, but then on the other side of the spectrum you have people like me, who dont want to use multiple platforms. I just use steam, I dont have origin, uplay, gog etc and I dont want them. I like having my entire library in one place.

You probably represent the majority of the Steam users

Fortunately I've never had a single problem with steam. So I'm probably a bit biased. I mean I hear all the time people complaining about their support, but I've never needed to use their support. The 2FA bothered me when it released, and I wouldn't mind going back to the way it was before they implemented it, but its not enough of a hassle that I would consider switching.

I don't think that their monopoly will be broken any time soon. Not many people are willing to compromise the functionality of having everything in one DRM , which lets be real offers a lot of features, in order to help other companies grow.

BTW, off-topic. I'd like to say that I like you a lot. You are always having mature discussions and many times point out things that no one thought of before. I don't usually say these kind of things :D

Well, truth to be told, Valve doesn't really have (m)any good qualities left. Not as a distributor, not as a software developer, not as a service provider, and sure as hell not as a game developer.
Honestly, if UPlay wouldn't exist, Steam would be the absolute worst digital video game platform by now, unscrupulously exploiting the sheer market share they built when they were in monopoly.

Alternatively, if you don't have the authenticator nor the recovery code, you can use this if you have your phone number verified:

I couldn't remove the Authenticator through the app because you need to know the Recovery code to do so. Thankfully the guy above posted a link which helped me. Thank you for your help nonetheless :)

oh? You dont need recovery code to unlink it. You can freely switch back to email without it.

I did that at least 3 times in my life (I changed 3 apps, windows phone user ._.") never needed that code.
EDIT: i strongly agree with the garbage opinion though.
