I started playing day of release. I'm still playing. How did my life devolve so much.

If it helps you can use a script that automates the golden cookie clicking, among other things if you want. Check the wiki for a list of them. Personally I use CookieMaster, until I quit it again. After awhile it gets old though when nothing left to do but grind heavenly chips.
Heard of there being a few good mobile versions too which expand it in some ways. The original game has a dungeons mode in the works, but it has been coming for maybe 6 months now if not more. Can try it in the beta version.

Easily my favorite is Sandcastle Builder, it is based off of an XKCD comic that was released one image per hour for months ( http://xkcd.aubronwood.com/ ). It starts slow and confusing, including have it's own terminology, but can keep going for months and still have new things unlocking and changing.
Hundreds of achievements and things to unlock. Usually around the time you max out one thing you unlock a new mechanic to focus on. For example sand/castles changes to glass chips/blocks. Although the prior mechanics never become fully irrelevant, just reduced in importance sometimes to come back later.
It has been around since last Autumn and still gets updates every few weeks. Using some kind of script can help alot if you do not want to actively pay attention to catch redundakitties, like cookie clicker's golden cookie except much more important, along with doing other things. I use Beachball, although the current version unfortunately has a memory leak but it can automate just about everything if you want it to.

Here is a small guide for it, although a few months out of date. The wiki can be your best friend if do not want to try to figure out stuff on your own, like the Glass Ceiling puzzles for example. http://xkcd-time.wikia.com/wiki/Sandcastle_Builder_Strategy_Guide
Anti-Idle is also a good one, although it rewards being active far more than idle. It is also one of the oldest idle games and been through multiple reworks, it is something like 15+ games in one. To name a few TCG, Fishing, RPG, Market manipulation, minesweeper, gardening, pet collecting.

I have tried most of the browser based idle games, and those two are what lasted me the longest. Admitedly few have the polish and style of cookie clicker but it doesn't take long til you are just grinding out heavenly chips and it seems like the dungeon update will be forever delayed.

I'm too lazy to explain why,but AdVenture Capitalist is one of the best idle games imo.

Smooth Operators is pretty good for idling. You just kinda sit there and let the money roll in, doing some managing here and there once in a while. You only progress if you decide to (by hiring an account manager) so the game won't really get out of control from idling. It is not an AFK game though since you do need to click a button at the end of each day and you do need to make sure you replace workers who quit.
