Warframe is great at first. But then it gets more than just repetitive. It just turns bad.
Also, the grind... I've never seen grind that's this bad in any other game other than the scummy clicker games that have billions of microtransactions.

Plus they seem to cock it up massively at least every other update

Same with LOTR on any other MMO f2p. Thing is GW2 free version is limited but let you have pretty much one character with almost full experience of GW2 (not that green expansion) and let you roam and level to 80, wich is (imho) the best part of the game.

I'm not sure how good free GuildWars 2 is but then i played it back then you had to buy it i've burned over 600 hours on that game so yeah. One of the best MMOs i've played.

Well, if you like WoW, then you probably should check out Wildstar? I probably would get into it myself, but none of my friends are playing MMOs anymore and on top of that it seems that they went a bit overboard with pretty colors, making scenery a bit distracting :P

I've played so many MMOs it's crazy lol.
The 2 games you named are MMORPGs, are you open to any other kind of MMOs? Like an MMOARPG?
The 2 you named are top notch MMORPGS and worth playing... I've only played LOTRO though. It's really good and it actually has one of the best communities in gaming. Several of my friends play Elder Scrolls Online I've been told is really good and definitely worth 10 bucks.
Guild Wars 2 is an amazing game. It has a pretty solid friendly community. You could always try it for free before buying, but I think it's definitely worth buying.
Final Fantasy XIV is really good it's $30 for the game and a $13 monthly sub.
Tree of Savior is good if you like Ragnarok type games. It's free
Neverwinter is pretty good and it's free.
Crowfall is still in development but this is the MMORPG to keep your eye on. Hands down I will be playing it when it comes out, it looks amazing so far. I believe it's $50.. It's not coming out till sometime next year.
City of Titans and Valiance Online are 2 super hero MMORPGs that are in development that going to be similar to City of Heroes that got closed down. Valiance Online is in pre alpha right now but you can download, play and help with development, not sure if it will have an initial cost or not but it's suppose to have a monthly sub. City of Titans will be $50 and then $15 a month from my understanding.
Marvel Heroes 2016 is my favorite MMO. It's not an MMORPG though, it's an MMOARPG. It's like Diablo. The game has an amazing community, a great dev team, and it's a solid game with one of the best Free 2 play models on the market today. I highly recommend it. If you like Super Heroes and/or Diablo style games it's worth checking out.
Path Of Exile, and Diablo 3 are good choices also.

the only true free ones i played were still pretty locked down and restricted till you pay for a subscription except LOTR & DDO (turbine versions).
TESO is the only one i found that's very unrestricted without a sub though, but it costs outright to buy.
most suggestions i see here are paid or locked down though.

Wait, TESO still has a subscription fee? I thought it was removed?

the forced subscription was removed. it still exists and has benifits, but you'r not locked out of anything the base game has to offer what so ever, just the DLC's. the subscription just unlocks DLC access and gives you a bunch of currency to spend on their online store. their store is also mostly just cosmetics, dlcs, & nothing that gives any benifits to gameplay to keep it from becoming a pay2win game too. one of the better balanced options ive ever seen though. in fact if you plan to put any money into ESO at all besides the initial purchase, the sub is well worth it from the bonuses.

TERA, free and available on Steam (although it has a lots of restrictions and depending on your region, you may not find it on the Steam store).
According to Steam's stats, there are over 3,000 active players daily. It has very few P2W content (things that affect the game a lot) except maybe for a book which allows a player to instantly teleport to any city within the game rather than traveling/flying there.

Wanna start playing an MMO again with a friend or maybe I can convince my gf as well. We've played WoW before, looking for something along those lines, free or maybe cheap but with a large player database. Might be a little too much to ask for right?
So far I've seen
LOTR Online - Free and
Elder Scrolls Online - 10euros
