Someone should make like a winter sale achievement group where members can make up their own achievements and the people that achieve them can enter a private giveaway or something. I just miss coal. :*(

Well I wasn't here for the last winter sale, but it seemed like it was fun. Oh well...

Same here, missed last year's winter sale but I was expecting something big.

Will still get too many games, I'm sure of it, but would have loved something more that just discounts.

The badge system is stupid to me. Even though this is the internet and that statement would look normal without logic or reasoning, I'd like to share some of mine.

The achievements were a great way to get players going back and playing games they already own, and even purchase cheap games of the day to earn the achievements they had. It flooded nearly dead servers with activity, got everyone playing games they just don't make time for normally, and got PC game consumers trying new and different things that they normally might not.

I loved the hell out of jumping into games I'd abandoned, or having a reason to try specific things outside of my norm. I don't really give 2 shits about badges, and nobody I've encountered so far online does. Having badge progress based on just straight up "Buy something." and "Buy someone else something." might help replace impulse buys of games on sale that the old system had, but none of the progress points feel like achievements, all of them are about steam selling shit. (Which is hard to complain about, that is the point of sales, but I miss the community feeling, and the re-invigoration of old games, and it doesn't expand the interests of the existing market of consumers.)

(The progress points being "Help us figure out which of these 3 will sell best x2" "Show us you can buy stuff anywhere" "Buy something" "Buy something for someone else" and "Make sure people know what to buy you")

Even if it wasn't for a prizes and giveaways, I'd prefer the old achievement system, with ties to games on sale that day. Have points per achievement, one in a free to play game daily to help those guys out, and have tiered badges for getting different overall points. (Bronze = 10 achievements, Silver = 20 achievements, Gold = 30 achievements.) You'd sell a ton of games, and have people involved and working towards stuff, rather than just "Well, I need to be on the store page once every 12 or w/e hours to vote, and buy something with the gift option selected, even if I'm just going to add it to my own inventory." Consumers would have additional motivation to try new things, revisit old things, and possibly purchase more than one game.

I personally hope Valve reverts to the old system, but I'm sure they know what they're doing, and they haven't done us wrong in the past. I just miss the old system, and it made a lot more business sense to me.

Yeah, I would love achievements. But, goal of achievements was to give some sales to games - without prizes, people won't buy -25% Skyrim, because it's pointless, right? But with prize, that's something that can make someone buy that indie games.
Ergo, "bring back that past summer small DLC-prizes".

Exactly my opinion. I loved playing all those games again! Ofcourse it was nice to win a few new games but i could live without that. Some ingame items or Coupons would already satisfy my needs. But this is just boring. It's all about a few discounts on games that in most cases already happened before

Actually, I agree. Not because I want free stuff (God knows I have enough games already!) but because it's disappointing that we USED to get a huge spectacular event and now we 'just' get a sale.

The sale is still absurdly generous but...Valve raised the bar, then failed to meet it - it's natural and okay to feel disappointed. What used to be an order winner is now just an order qualifier - having a super generous sale is just sort of expected of the digital delivery retailers now, in large part thanks to Steam. But now that their competition like GOG, GMG, Amazon etc are doing the same thing, Valve should be seeking to do more than they have before, not less.

It's not that the sale is 'bad' or not steep enough, just that it isn't as interesting as prior events. I could get cheap games anywhere, but only Steam had a really fun event.

I would imagine Valve stopped with the fun stuff due to the sheer amount of people abusing the stuff. There's a reason why we can't have nice stuff ^_^

That's what happens when people abuse a good thing. Greed ruins everything. Sad that the people who have been legit steam customers have to pay the price for the crimes of all the coal farmers and free gift scammers. Pity The last few years were fun. Thanks to the greedy little shits now we get badges. I don't blame steam though; I understand 100%.

edit: how can anyone be shocked? I mean come on, you know how much the spoiled little brats took and abused last year, you think they'd really be super nice this year too?

I was hoping they would create something new this year. Doesn't have to be coal related, but achievement related would have been nice. I'm not surprised there's no coal this year but I am surprised that nothing took it's place. The glorious users of Steam seemed to have ruined Christmas.

Fallout: New Vegas for $7 over at Green Man Gaming with the voucher code right off the front of the site - too bad doesn't include all the DLC...

Edit: NVM - the Steam version with all the DLC is slightly cheaper than getting the game and then adding the DLC (on sale) via Steam...

Achivements are good i think, so games like "Foreign Legion" will get new palyers, and other people will do not buy a death game.
