Well.. if you like the setting/story of the game, The Witcher 2 might be more to your liking.. Areas are smaller, combat is more action-oriented
I understand your complaints though (except the music never bothered me) the first game can feel a bit off from time to time.. You'd have to like RPGs more to enjoy the game in comparison to the second. Imo both games are great but feel very different.
As far as combat goes you learn more moves/fighting stances and signs as you progress, which I felt was enough to keep me entertained with the combat for the whole time but if you're not a fan of the timed clicking mechanic there unfortunately isn't a way to get around..

I have the second game too, I'm gonna give it a try soon. I like RPGs, but I'll admit my interest is more towards the more action-y ones. I blame Mass Effect.

I would definetly check out Witcher 2 then, I just hope you're into dodgerolling ;)
Actually ME1 --> ME2/3 is a pretty good comparison, quite a few things have been streamlined in The Witcher 2 but the combat system is still unique and very fun to play.

It can easily stand on its own as the main story in Witcher 2 is much more about politics rather than Geralt's own story/Wild Hunt etc.
Sure, there are some things that you'd understand better or appreciate more if you've played the first one but if the gameplay hinder the game experience too much OP shouldn't have to miss out on TW2 just cause of not having finished the first :)

True, but the game has a lot more intriguing and comprehensive story which you can only appreciate if you play them in an order and pay attention to all the hidden gems. It is especially even more fun if you are a fan of the book series. I love how they tied in all the plot lines of the game into the mysterious plots of the book series.

You may like the Bureau then.
Its got a very mass-effecty style of combat but with an xcom flavour.
Gets a lot of hate but I liked it.

I've been meaning to play the Bureau for a while, but my backlog's gigantic as it is, so it'll probably be a while.

I'd say get the books and read them. You'll understand what made Witcher popular, and you'll understand the plot better. Books are simply amazing,The scope and the plot of witcher books can only be compared to "Game of thrones" series by Martin. There are 8 books of witcher saga atm, and the games start where the last book ends. I'm not sure if all books are already translated into english though, you might need to google fan translations of the last two or three books.

Agreed completely. Only GoT is keeping level of Witcher in Dark Fantasy stories.

Or get a polish friend. That's what I did. I have a close polish friend. He reads the books and then narrates it back to me in English. Always have good friends :D

... if you find it chalenge to find with just one enemy... because it intend to be that, so you have to use all of your arsenal, potion, oil, grenade, trap.... etc . It not COD, where you run around and gun down anything that moving

Combat in The Witcher took some acclimation. I couldn't hardly kill anything, in the beginning, but once I got the hang of it, I never needed potions, again.
If anyone needs some tips/a tutorial on how to fight in The Witcher, get in touch with me and I'll see if I can help you out. Once you're able to kill anything fighting you, it's much easier to enjoy the game.

and badrat too, it involve all of the player some kind of tingling inside their stomach when play it

The Witcher is very slow and complicated for the first half. You'll likely hate it. But if you press on you'll find that everything you hated was all brilliance in the end and you'll wish there was more of it. It's not a game where you stand and trade blows with enemies and you have to use your head more than your sword to beat it.

Are you using the right sword? you know silver for monsters and iron for humans, witcher is a hard game but not that much(5x1 is fair to Geralt), well if you dont like Elders scroll line you probally not like witcher too, but give a try to witcher 2 hes more "arcade" so maybe you will like the style.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's entirely likely I was using the wrong sword, but I don't think I'll be trying again any time soon. The setting just didn't click with me either, and that's a big part of RPGs for me.
I actually really like The Elder Scrolls (well, Skyrim; haven't played any of the others), the combat in The Witcher just felt weird and clunky to me.

The Elder Scrolls and The Wicher series is very different really, the combat is different, the navigation, and all that, also a lot easier.

Same happened to me, couldn't go on after getting into Wyzima. I spent like 1 hour or more on the stupid bank heist because the enemies would surround and do me an awful bukkake.
Worst part is, that the spanish dubbing is extremely awful and it's completely off at times.
Comment has been collapsed.
There's a specific combat stance that you should use when encountered by groups, then there's fast for agile enemies and heavy for bigger ones... Actually, everything is explained very well in the tutorial mission, you just really have to use it :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Yea I know, but like I said, the spanish dubbing is terribad, and you can barely understand anything, it's like it was done by monkeys. I'm looking forward to play the game from start to finish someday.
Is the english audio half decent?

Dunno bout English, but I'm rockin my Russian trans which is golden, probably doesn't say anything but still.

I've also tried it, and it honestly feels like I'm playing a very bad generic MMO, in regards to combat. I mean, yes, I like RPGs, I will spend ages in Shining force, Fire Emblem, Tales series, but if the gameplay is terrible, then I just can't bring myself to play. That, and the mouse acceleration bothers me to no end.
Edit: if it wasn't for the mouse acceleration I'd probably try it again.
Comment has been collapsed.
Which game ? Because Witcher 1 doesn't have mouse acceleration but Witcher 2 does have it. But its hackable and there is a way to get around it. If you want I can give you the method. You just have to change a few lines in your ini file.
Comment has been collapsed.
The "isometric" view modes seem to be free of mouse acceleration, thankfully.
The over-the-shoulder view on the other hand is not so great (also, the mouse acceleration gets worse with lower framerates).
I'd suggest using the "low isometric" camera mode as an alternative to over-the-shoulder

Does it ? I haven't played it recently. I have my Retail Disc which I bought when the game first released, I remember playing on my old PC (a really long long time ago .... huh ... you know what I'm gonna install it and play the game again)
But I don't remember there being any mouse acceleration in game. Though like Dreadmoth mentioned, I always used isometric view and I don't know about how the problem is in other view modes. I'll test it out and get back to you once I reinstall the game and check it out myself.

The main reason Witcher is so popular is because of its story / plot line. I'm a big fan of the novels (though the TV show meh ...) and the games do a really good job of adapting the series into a game unlike other books turned games (notably Game of Thrones, where they butchered an awesome book into an abomination of a game, both rpg one and the rts one)
Also, though it is a RPG, its combat mechanics are very different from other games, with active dodgerolling and using the right weapon from enemy types etc. If you go with a wrong sword or sign, you'll hardly do any damage. Also you need to position yourself carefully or the AI will surround you and destroy you. These elements make the game challenging and different from other RPG games.
These are some of the main points that make the game so fun and popular. But like you mentioned, its not for everyone. Personally I love its dark and mature themes, music and gameplay elements with its awesome story line.
If you are finding the game difficult I'd suggest playing with a walkthrough/gameplay guide as the game does have some complicated parts.

Very likely indeed. Sometimes I think it's a lack of patience in people, be they younger or not.. The combat in TW1 is in no way broken but it is very unlike your usual combat system, so you have to invest in it or even get used to it which might not appeal to everyone but for me that's what makes it so special. Maybe non-button mashing LMB combat can be a turn off for some..

i actually loved everything about The Witcher, except the combat... i just don't like it, it seems wrong in every way. and i did play it, almost 30 hours on it, but i can't stand the combat system... it's sad, i love the concept and the story... i didn't tried the witcher 2 yet, but based on some gameplay videos, it has a "better" combat system.

This is why I'm not playing The Witcher. I read the books and I love The Witcher universe but I can't play action/RPG without fighting someone and I can't stand the combat system. Second game has better system but It's not worthy playing The Withcer 2 before ending the first one.

Atmosphere, dialogues, world, characters, music - everything is amazing in this game. I'll give you that - some people may not like combat. But it's not that bad either. I heard they made it better in the second one, I haven't played it yet so I don't know. But the first Witcher is one of the best RPG games out there.

It took some time to get into the first game, I discontinued it for a long time and got back to it a few months later and played through the rest of it in a few days.
The sequel is a lot better when it comes to combat and the people don't all look nearly the same with the same voice ^^

Took me quite awhile to get into it at first but I decided that one day I'll dedicate to playing only witcher since I wanted to get through it and complete it, haven't been in hooked since than.

Half-life 1 crushes hl2, even to this day. Without graphic enhancements. Black mesa source is just icing on the cake.

Now you've made me to replay the Witcher or at least give it 5 more minutes. Thanks for the thread! :)
Somehow I like the battle system with all the decision making stuff like what stance, what sword, what sign, what greese and what elixir to use and how to click the combos in-time. Plus the story, of course (I'm a fan of Sapkovsky books). And in-game option to change languages (I'm a linguist as well ;) ). All this makes The Witcher one of the most perfect game series for me (though I hate the actors play in my mother tongue in the Witcher 1)

The combat in Witcher 1 is horrible and you can skip it. The second is really good and fair if you aren't terribad. It's a cake walk on the hardest difficulty if you use the Dark equipment, and challenging at best if you don't. Dodging is your best friend. Witcher ain't no superhero who can take a beating like superman.

I guess people love developers more than a game because of all that respect to the fans, free DLC, nor DRM. The game itself is far from masterpiece. It's just a decent rpg. By the way if you have read the books the game gets a bit more interesting.

Did anyone else think there would be a hidden Witcher giveaway in here? :)
I think the first game's combat was not the strong point of the game, so if you're looking for something like Dark Souls where fighting things is great fun even if you don't care about the story, you might be disappointed. I wouldn't call it bad or unfair, but it's not the usual rpg fighting, that's for sure... :)
I think most people play the Witcher games for the story, the characters, the experience of being in the witcher world. Fairy tales for adults, maybe. If you played for six hours and didn't care about any of that stuff, it's probably safe to quit and find something you enjoy more. Games are supposed to be fun, after all! :)

I understand you, first Witcher had terrible combat system. I left this game at the end of Act I. That game in my country was for me overhyped. Later I played the second Witcher, and that was really good, I liked this game, and I end it, unlike the first one. So, try The Witcher II, I think you like it.

I just don't get the praise. I bought it during a sale after I heard all sorts of good things about it, but I played that game for six hours and I just don't like it. The music is repetitive at best. It takes entirely too long to walk from one side of a map to another. The combat is either feels like a boring rhythm game or is entirely unfair, pitting you against six enemies with no easy way to regain health. Even fights with single enemies can be stupidly tough.
It's fine that other people enjoy the game (I'm probably doing something wrong anyway), but I just don't get it.
