I've only played the older Spellforces 1 & 2, I enjoyed them, they play like a RTS melded with an RPG.

Yes, very good. Lightweight cRPG + lightweight RTS, but they make an awesome combination, and despite their age, they look really good even in close-up third-person view, not just from the far-away top-down camera.
They are also long. Not the 3-hour action movies most games are today, but an 100+ hour marathon of long and numerous levels, and these are just the base games without the also lengthy expansions.

Spellforce 1 is awesome game, i played it many years ago for the 1st time, and still playing sometimes from beginning :D

A little bit late, but yes I love the guild series, it´s also possible to play it multiplayer (local-network setup, so you need some kind of tunnel-network). The concept of leading a family to success is great, you develop you characters, your business and politics. Send political opponents to the guillotine. Of course you could also be just the best baker of the "hanse" and sell you bread in all cities.

They are really excellent empire building games imho. Lots of unique concepts and mechanics. There's no really anything else like it (except kind of Crusader Kings). However, at the same time it's impossible to recommend really them. They are riddled with bugs and technical problems. I always got the feeling that the developer bit off way more than they could chew.

Only get them if you know you like this genre of game and have a high tolerance for technical issues.

They are quite old, but I loved the first a lot, it's worthy :)
