A game designed for phone/tablets but released on PC because it would probably not earn enough revenue on mobile platforms.

The game in question is Super Dungeon Run .

Now I was browsing through new releases and stumble on this game. Price tag was low and steam refunds makes impulse buying quite tempting so didnt give it much thought read the description and bought it. Installed in almost no time I was welcomed by "Missing executable" error which lead to create this thread on the hub . Fixing took around hour and a half .

Once in game you are thrown in your first Dungeon where the controls are being explains. How wonderful is to drag with your mouse, holding your left button while your minions are sliding in the dungeon, hitting into walls and getting stuck. I dont even want to talk about some traps that can lead to chain reaction and wipe you out in no time just because one of your minions slided a bit more to the left while you were controlling rest of the morons.

Out of the first dungeon you are welcomed by familiar mobile interface with big buttons and an option menu with not that many options(its an unity game so options are on the launch screen but then again you can only pick resulution and windowed/fullscreen and in-game you can turn sound/music on/off) . Suspicious are growing but again.. its an Early Access game, stuff will change.

After playing for 30mins more and already getting sick of the repetetive rooms and same quest rewards even when the quests were different decided to ask in hub is it a mobile port even though nothing shows on google store. But someone beat me to it and posted this thread . So we ended up with a game designed for mobile, released on PC after it passes greenlight. Still even on greenlight description nowhere says that was designed for mobile platforms ...

They say that Steam Early Access is perfect for them so they can finish their game which they can't do on mobile... but as far as I remember I know 1 paid game on google store that started in beta and update to full release with price tag increased after each update. The Game is Pirate Dawn .

Now SDR can be fun if you dont mind the drag control but then you face the range minion AI which acts like Link ... it destroy every pod/barrel in range... I gave the game fair chance and played it for hour and a half (enough to get max party size) but I ended up with mixed feeling about it... on 1 side somehow fun on other.. annoying and frustrating experience. Thanks Gaben for steam refunds!

Rant over.

Depends on developer/publisher/genre.
Depends on franchise/series .
Your poll is bad and you should feel bad about it.

What could be possible worse than mobile game ported on PC?

Bad Rats :>
or Uriel's Chasm :>

Actually plenty of those ;) Mobile games may not be the top notch games avaiable (yet there are still some examples of very good ports being great PC games), but there are plenty of much worse things on Steam :>

I never played uriel's chasm but I had some fun in Bad Rats while idling for cards. Still I just hope the " mobile design on PC game" doesnt turn into a trend like unity asset flips, rpgmaker game with basic assets and such.

But its true that there are quite a lot of carbage on steam since GL and Early Access opened doors.

As to answet to your question - depends on Genre. If it's Adventure game or turn based one I may play it if it's good and only has a bad controls (for example most of jRPGs ported from consoles will have you vanigate enemies by WSAD instead of mouseclick, but as it's turn based I can live with that), while in some genres bad controls = dealbreaker (for example brawler/slasher or platformer).

I don't mind if it's a port or not, if the game is good then I will gladly play it on PC (also I don't own a tablet, and I don't want to upgrade my phone just to play games, that's why I have a PC :P)

Add co-op/MP aspect in a game and you can turn on microtransactions with an ease.

If a video game has bad controls, it doesn't matter if it has the greatest story, greatest design, best graphics, if you cannot even play it. As the AVGN said once: "Now what's the most important aspect about any game? Well, being able to fucking play it!"

The post is about mobile controls on a PC game and sadly on this game they dont work well and devs wont be bothering to change controls because the main game design is 1-button game.

And yes SDR is not a port , its a PC game with mobile game design. I wont mind getting it on my tablet but on PC is a no go for me.

Well there was nowhere on description that its 1-button game + I was looking for something to play and that fit the bill at first time.

Now if they decide to add squad option that would be great because at the moment if you max your party size you have 22 minions and in some trap mazes its certain that you will lose 2-3 at least because they keep pushing each other.

The "one-button" came from devs, not from me.

It's my preferances , thats for sure. If I lose because I'm bad - okay. If I lose because controls are considered bad in my book - we got a problem.

If they change controls or add squads will give the game a 2nd try on release but at the moment is pass.

as other already said, there are serveral things far worse than a mobile port.

from what you've described the game designed reminded me of Overlord (and someone lese in the mobile game? thread also references Overlord).

Personally I like the idea of keeping things simple, but I can also understand that it can be frustrating to have your party wiped because the AI is bad.

Same with Overlord ... you could easily loe some well-equipped minions if you're not carefull. However you can do a lot more miro-management in Overlord (like grouping your minions and having them defend an "area-around-a-moveable-flag" that you can set any time.

Well, if they (the SDR devs) have set their mind to making a one-button-does-all game, then that's that.
It's not really about a bad mobile port, it's a design choice.
If you want to be a minion master and do some more micro management, then you'd have to look or a different game.

That was the reason I bought it. I like Overlord as game though I never completed and this game sounded quite fun but after playing it the whole drag with your mouse holding your left key annoyed me a lot.

I respect their decision and they can do w/e they want in their game. I just voice my opinion as rant or not , depending on reader's view.

But having your group wiped out because of the controls is something that frustrates me and doesnt motivate me to get better.

The first thing I noticed was that the game was on Early Access. This means it might be a mobile port that's going to grow into something better once the controls are updated for PC (or it could stay terrible, that's the gamble with every EA title.)

Bad ports, be it from console or mobile titles, are always a big annoyance. People trying to cash in from the PC audience without doing the actual work required to adapt to their target platform.

  1. It's not a mobile port - they just designed it at first for mobile but they say opportunity in Steam's EA so they went for it through GreenLight.
  2. Current attidute of devs is to not change controls so they can keep it simple(nothing bad in it since it all depends on personal preferances)

Agree for bad ports, recently got a controller and trying to find games to play(mainly ports) but often they seem as cash grab .

Still looks better than the 1001 "Horror" games that are stinking up Greenlight. (You know, the Unity Asset Store flips which for some reason all have the same "hand holding a lantern" model, and where the trailers only consistently show that the game is too dark to properly see the incredibly bland environments, with an inevitable generic-looking zombie-thing jump scare at the end)

  1. Buy unity asset pack.
  2. Make it into a game .
  3. Publish on Steam .
  4. ???
  5. Profit.

There is a lot of mobile game that actually received positive respond when ported to PC, games like vector and Fieldrunners 2 are two examples of them.
