I've just come to the conclusion that 2013 was proooobably the worst year for PC gaming of all time. Of all time!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_in_video_gaming

We had some good indies, but most of the AAA releases were just stinkypoo.

2012 brought us XCOM, The Walking Dead, Mass Effect 3, Spec Ops, Diablo 3, Borderlands 2, Torchlight 2, Chivalry, Dishonored, Far Cry 3, Assassin's Creed 3 ...

2013 brought us... what exactly? Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed 4, Batman AO, Metro LL and expansions for XCOM and Civ V. I'm not sure there's anything else worth mentioning. (Before you say "Bioshock Infinite": that is a bad game - a VERY bad game - and you're a bad person if you like it.)

2014, on the other hand, seems very promising: Thief, Titanfall, new Dragon Age, new Mass Effect (unannounced, but very likely), Star Citizen, The Crew, Witcher 3, The Division...

What do you think of 2013 (were the new consoles to blame for the lack of titles?) and what are you most looking forward to in 2014?

+1 It had a fantastic score, beautiful graphics, and an engaging plot, along with other things. Where did it go wrong?

I won't say it's a bad game but I personally don't think it was a great game. It didn't do anything to push the series. Bioshock has turned into a pretty standard formula unfortunately.

It's a simplistic linear corridor shooter slash hobo simulator with shooting, more shooting, then some more shooting, utilizing a game mechanic that makes no sense (vigors) and everybody would shit on it if the girl was ugly.

Spec Ops is also a corridor and cover shooter, nothing new there... however, the story and envinronment is what makes the game good, but it seems you developed a personal hate towards the game, so, whatever :)

I'm curious if you liked Dead Island, since the crafting in that game also doesn't make sense... stapling money to weapons or what ? =)

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't hate the game. It's just not good as an actual game itself, the whole package. And honestly, neither was Spec Ops. Both games rely on the story and nothing else, but at least Spec Ops wasn't hyped to hell and back and didn't immediately get a cult fanboy following (that happened many months later). Besides, Spec Ops is probably the only game where you win by not playing it, and that's what makes it special and why it's on the list.

Dead Island... Eh... If you don't consider it to be a serious game, but used for some fun with your online buddies, it's okay. Mind you, even stapling money to weapons makes more sense than crafting in The Witcher 2. That one... jesus.

If I personally enjoyed a game, I give 0 fucks on their opinion on it (Not that I need a reason to ignore the opinions of random people on the internet.) I personally enjoyed BioShock Infinite, if that makes me a bad person, then I guess I might as well go kill some puppies or something.

This thread is dumb you're just saying a majority of good widespread AAA titles are bad even though they were great and popular as well as critically acclaimed. Also choosing to not include indie games is stupid. Gaming isn't about AAA games. If that's your way of thinking then go play COD and stay out of the indie gaming community. It's better off without people like you trying to shit on everyone's parade. People like you ruin the gaming community with your BS negativity. GTFO hipster.

This isn't a topic about indie games. They are excluded here. Not because they're bad, but just because. You can open a different topic about indies in 2013 and we'll have a merry ol' time there.

(Also, hipsters like indies. COD kiddies do not. You got everything backwards.)

Eh, Torchlight is borderline... It's not truly indie as in "two guys maeded thiz", and it's not a big title, either. I included it because it was much-awaited.

Path of Exile is free-to-play. I wasn't sure whether to include it or not.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You ALSO have no idea what indie is. It means it comes from an independent studio. One that Doesn't receive funds from publishers. Not "2 guys made this game so it's indie" seriously man you are doing such injustice to this community and the gaming community as a whole. Just stop.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Are Kickstarter projects indie? Obviously not, by your definition.

And for the record, Torchlight had a Chinese investor, which now owns most of Runic Games and acts as their publisher in Asia.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, that is bullshit. Torchlight 2 is indie. Just like Minecraft is indie, and Castle Crashers is indie, and that crappy game no-one will buy is indie. The fact that you included an indie game, but then claim we cannot counter you with indie examples is bullshit and makes anything you say about this list in particular invalid.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Indie literally means independently published. Additionally, consider if the developer functions as a publisher of another group's games, or if it has farmed out production of its games to another group.

If a group develops and publishes its own games, does not hire other groups to develop their games, and does not publish anyone else's games, it is an independent developer. Therefore, every single game they release is an Indie title.

Some development teams are owned by a publisher, but are given 100% autonomy. Runic Games, developers of Torchlight, are owned by Perfect World International. However, they have pledged not to dictate how Runic Games goes about its business. They provide distribution expertise, but do not tell Runic Games how to create their games. They make no demands of Runic Games. They allow Runic Games to retain their independence.

Runic Games continues to operate autonomously. They operate independently of the company who owns them, which is Perfect World International. Any game they produce in-house and publish in-house is an indie title. Therefore, Runic Games is an indie developer.

So broken that it pushed ALL projects back several months, including Mirror's Edge 2 (which I'm still hoping will come out in 2014, but you never know, and this being EA, they'll probably fuck up the parkour and make the game reliant on combat).

I dont think u were playing those games in 2012, spec ops was crap on pc cuz of its port from console the mechanics were crap, far cry 3 had a crap story with an annoying main character that totally dropped the ball half way thru the game and jst gave no explanation for what had happened around with fade to black screens that eventually didnt utilize half the play area. ME3 and Diablo 3 were crapped on by the community, me3 for poor story and diablo for boring game mechanics, looting and RMAH and lack of a good story. Xcom was released buggy, was good till its 2013 patches similarly with torchlight 2 user content patch and chivalry. Both of which are indie titles?

and u skip over sleeping dogs, darksiders 2, and may i say the darkness 2 which had a create but short story.

What about injustice, blacklist, saints row 4, payday 2 (not indie with starbreeze and 505 behind it) dota 2 official release, blood dragon, DMC if u think fc3 is a good game dmc is almost equal in score.

Just cause 2012 had a lot of major price cuts on games released that year which made being on pc great doesnt mean that all of 2013 is crap compared.

Spec Ops was pretty amazing. It took video game story telling to a new high. Diablo 3 on the other hand...

Bioshock was much like Spec Ops. Amazing atmosphere, great story, characters you actually cared about, decisions that actually felt important, but lackluster generic-ish gameplay. I put them in the same camp of "great games, but could have been better." Diablo was pretty awful though.

2013 will probably have more good big-name games than 2014 imo. Titanfall and Watch Dogs are the only AAA titles so far that look good to me. Everything else seems overly generic (not that Titanfall isn't pushing into generic shooter territory, but I have hope it won't just be another CoD clone . . . . probably just to get those hopes dashed).

Sorry to burst your bubble, but a new Mass Effect won't happen in 2014 when it hasn't had a single piece of marketing until now, same with Fallout 4. It just doesn't happen with huge budget games like that (see: commercial suicide).

I'll probably pick up Bioshock Infinite and dozens of great indie titles in 2014.
