Yeah i agree. Not only in games but movies as well although thats a different topic now.
All in all, this was a year of social justice activism that somehow migrated from tumblr to gaming community.
Its funny now how the gender of a naked, dismembered corpse is a more "important" topic than the fact its a naked, dismembered corpse
Year when one of the best selling releases in 2013 was labeled as sexist because they didnt include a woman as one of the leading characters.
It's like we got a bunch of infantile, adolescent Tipper Gore's who are now ravaging through the game files all night long trying to find nonexistant controversy and score some Kotaku points.
Its also a year of extremely low standars, you didnt have to look very far to see every mediocre game labeled as GOTYAY. Best example would be that Bioshock Infinite you mentioned. It just boggles my mind how people are wiling to turn a blind eye on every flaw in the game as long as there is only one redeeming factor in it
EDIT
Also why would you list new Thief as one of the promising releases in 2014? That game is going to be utter crap

Game has gone through some much changes now that its pretty clear how they have no idea in which direction to go and what do they want to make of it. Adding silly gimmicks like xp progression (that has no place in proper Thief game) then removing them few weeks later is a clear indication how lost they are.
Also whenever you see devs advertising a game with "we want to bring xyz to a broader audience this time" that should always come as a big warning sign. And when was the last time we read something like that? Oh, right

While I'm being constantly skeptical about the new THIEF game, I still have some hope for it. Remember, Fallout 3 tried to appeal to a broader audience, and it succeeded, so it could happen to this one as well. The team behind this has already made a successful revival of an old series by doing Deus Ex, and if you ask me, I'll take those crappy boss fights and lazy ending gladly with the stellar game that had these faults. If Thief is anything like it, it'll be good enough for me. If not, all the more reason to play the old ones.
Last time changes are also a gamble. Yes, they can mean horrible changes to bad ideas to begin with, but they might be for the better. Lots of movies thrown in classic scenes as last minute additions, and even they didn't know those will be the scenes that people remember the most. Remember Braindead (Dead Alive)? Peter Jackson spent the remaining money for the production to shoot the scene where Lionel walks the undead baby in the park, 'cause why the hell not. Turned out to be the most pants-pissing funny scene of the movie.
Not saying Thief will be a good game, but writing it down as shitty before it's released is a tad bit hasty.

Funny thing, people said the same stuff when Hitman Absolution was about to be released.
So for me this is nothing more than history repeating itself considering everything that i've seen and read so far doesnt look promising at all. In best case scenario it might be one of those "play and forget" releases if they dont decide to add some more improvements at this point

If Thief fails - and it's possible that it will - then it'll make the "2014 was a bad year for PC gaming" list next Xmas :P
Too early to tell how linear it's going to be and how the game mechanics will work out. Deus Ex: HR was worse than the original Deus Ex, but it was still an excellent game.

i've just read the tile and thought " lol i should post "BIOSHOCK INFINITE FOR GOTY OMGOMGOMGOM!!!! - one month later: yeah, it's a nice little game " " .
now, as i've read a bit of some posts, i realized, it would sound stupid. but that's basically gaming 2013 in a nutshell. (for PC gamers)
don't even get me started with PS4 vs XBOX one, with the obvious winner, Nintendo.
other than that, there wasn't much going on this year.

Your post is invalid, we got Shadow Warrior Reboot on 2013 and that is all we need.

"Before you say "Bioshock Infinite": that is a bad game - a VERY bad game - and you're a bad person if you like it." - right there is where your opinion stops being important.
Seriously, your list is very subjective, I could add 10 or more games that came out this year that I loved but you maybe hated.

2013 was a very good year for indies! Here's just a small list of all the awesome indies we got this year:
And those are the only big name indies! Also, you can't ignore Crysis 3. It redeemed itself in terms of graphics quality after Crysis 2 failed to innovate. And if you aren't a graphics person (like me. I don't give two shits about graphics- or visuals in general. I'm that guy who doesn't care if he's watching something in HD. I don't even use a 1080p monitor), you still have to admit it's impressive. And the game itself isn't that bad. Also, you seem to be pretty damn closeminded, from what I've been reading from your responses to people. And the whole "If you like it, you're a bad person" thing doesn't help, either. -Shrugs- I'd say this has been a pretty great year in gaming. It was the first year where I pre-ordered a video game. And I Pre-ordered THREE OF THEM! I pre-ordered Runner 2, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX+, and Papers, Please! Overall, the year was pretty fine. You really can't expect only AAAs to lead the industry. That kind of mind-set is what holds potential indie developers back from making what might possible be the next Major-Hit indie game.

2014, on the other hand, seems very promising: Thief"
l, fucking o, l
irrelevant, I don't know about any of those titles you listed there for 2014, but at least we have Transistor to look forward to :hee:

I'm not familiar with any of the other titles, but no, I'm not saying that, I just happened to list the one closest to him calling Bioshock Infinite bad (not that I'm saying BI is good or bad, just the fact that he thinks Thief is looking promising while saying BI, to me, is laughable)

Can't wait for Witcher 3 and Max Payne 4 next year 2014 :p

I'd have to say that this year gave us less great AAA titles than other recent years and more DLCs/expansions for existing ones, but I wouldn't know about it being the worst year of all time...
Here's some things that people seem to be forgetting about the original post. We're talking about:
Thank you very much.

Bioshock Infinite a bad game? I'd like you to go out and complete the following games: Country Justice, Gods & Generals, Lester The Unlikely, The Polar Express (console versions, not handheld), Spiderman: The Movie (PS2), Sniper (some old game from City Interactive, can't remember the exact title but ooooooooooh boy it's bad), Alien Anarchy and The Quest For Aladdin's Shitty Treasure (PS2). Once finished with those, you'll learn what "bad" really means, you spoiled little princess.
On the other hand, I found my share of great games this year, like Papers, Please!, Slender: The Arrival, Ridicoulous Fishing, Carmageddon's Android port (the changes make it a legit choice), Shadow Warrior, Walking Dead Season 2, The Stanley Parable (this coming from someone who played the mod back in the day), and while I didn't play them, my friends seem to have enjoyed a HELL of a lot AssCreed 4 and The Last Of Us. Nothing wrong with this year's games, you should probably take a break or something if you hated Infinite that much.

I wouldn't count on a 2014 Star Citizen release, that's likely going to be a ( late ) 2015 release.

I've just come to the conclusion that 2013 was proooobably the worst year for PC gaming of all time. Of all time!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_in_video_gaming
We had some good indies, but most of the AAA releases were just stinkypoo.
2012 brought us XCOM, The Walking Dead, Mass Effect 3, Spec Ops, Diablo 3, Borderlands 2, Torchlight 2, Chivalry, Dishonored, Far Cry 3, Assassin's Creed 3 ...
2013 brought us... what exactly? Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed 4, Batman AO, Metro LL and expansions for XCOM and Civ V. I'm not sure there's anything else worth mentioning. (Before you say "Bioshock Infinite": that is a bad game - a VERY bad game - and you're a bad person if you like it.)
2014, on the other hand, seems very promising: Thief, Titanfall, new Dragon Age, new Mass Effect (unannounced, but very likely), Star Citizen, The Crew, Witcher 3, The Division...
What do you think of 2013 (were the new consoles to blame for the lack of titles?) and what are you most looking forward to in 2014?
