If you are looking for an arpg like diablo 1&2 I highly recommend Grim Dawn. It's the same people who made titan quest and it's in early access but quite far along. They recently hired a former employee of Blizzard North who worked on Diablo 1&2, so it's gaining quite a bit of momentum.

Someone else recommended Grim Dawn, it looks really good! I'll probably end up picking it up lol. Thanks!

The only thing that really matters is that you play Ys 1 before Ys 2. There's also some references to previous games in Ys Origin that you might miss, but otherwise you'll understand the plot with no problem in this one. Besides that, it doesn't matter which one you play first.

They have a chronological order, but they are standalone, if that makes sense. Essentially you are free to play them in any order except for I and II.
Origin features 3 other playable characters. The rest follow adventurer Adol Christin. You will find references to other titles in each one.
Also, Chronicles is a remake of the original titles, and as such has a radically different battle system from the others. It utilizes a "bump" system, where you just bump into enemies to damage them. The others have an action hack/n slash type battle system.
The chronological order of the games available on Steam is Origin -> Chronicles -> Felghana -> Nepishtim

I've seen all of them go as low as $3.74, so give it a few days. :)
Napishtim is new to Steam, so it probably wont go that low.
Origin has a demo too, so give that a try, All but Chronicles play pretty much the same, so if you like the Origin Demo, you'll like all the other titles.

Get Lisa. One of the best rpgs I have ever played. It's quirky and serious. I will bring out emotions in you. There's lots of hard choices in it too.Best of all, it's on sale...of course :P

Those are two very different questions. RPG vs. JRPG.
And that said, there is great variety among all RPG genres.
High fantasy with deep customization? Skyrim, Witcher series, Dragon Age, Pillars of Eternity, etc.
But there are lots of great RPGs that aren't "high fantasy" but are still worth playing.
Heck, even the Costume Quests and LEGO series are RPGs.

Have Skyrim and Dragon Age, love them both. Another rec for Witcher, I really need to try those games out. Haven't looked into the Costume Quests or any LEGO games, so thanks for the suggestions!

I'm looking around the store for RPGs/JRPGs, and I'm curious as to what others think are good games under this category.
I'm open for anything, just list it below and I'll check it out!
