I don't own a 3DS, but I have an old DSi that I've played Resident Evil 1 on. It was a good port and if it's one of your favorite game of all time, you might enjoy playing that version, if you haven't already. I'd love to play the remaster. I've played 1-4 and still think that the original is still the best.

I would like to be in your whitelist for RE, but I can't prove my commitment throught playtime, since I played through RE 5 and 6 on the PS3, and also through part of RE DS.
I actually found out one way: check my PS3 trophies, by filling in my PSN handle (same as Steam: Leeuw96) here
I can't give a direct link, because of the way the sote works. I don'thave all the trophies, only 39% om RE5, because I spent most of the time playing co-op campaign on my brother's account, because the AI was good for nothing. If you want to check his trophies, his name is Youri94

Skimmed the comments and didn't see this mentioned, so definitely take a look at Etrian Odyssey IV. Probably my favorite turn-based battle system ever and my favorite RPG on the 3DS.

If you want something more character driven and don't mind some wackiness, I really enjoyed Rune Factory 4 as well.

Well, if you like Turn Based and/or Tactical combat, check out any of the Shin Megami Tensei games on 3ds:

Strange Journey
Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
Persona Q: Shadows of the Labyrinth
All of the SMT games are pretty good, though they can be a bit grindy or Guide Dang It.

As far as more standard JRPGs, I've also heard good things about the Etrian Odyssey games and the Bravely series. Hope you find some good gems!

Bump! I'm such a RE fan that I bought RE HD Remaster on pre-order, hahahaha. The winner will get a great game for sure, I loved play it all again with the new stuff added. I missed the laughable FMV intro though. :)

I have a 3DS, but most of what I'd recommend has already been mentioned, lol.

I know you said you don't like Mario games much, but it wasn't really clear whether you meant the series in general or the main platformers. The Mario & Luigi series are really solid JRPGs. I loved Dream Team (& Bowser's Inside Story on DS, haven't played the first two games yet) and I've heard good things about Paper Jam (the latest game, crossover with Paper Mario).

If you like/don't mind visual novels, one I've been enjoying lately is Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi. It's got romance in it (mostly near the end), but overall, it focuses more on the politics and history of the Meiji Restoration and the Shinsengumi and the stuff about the demons. That said, there's an updated port with new content coming out on Steam later this year (it's already out on PS Vita), so if you're interested, you might want to wait for that instead.

I second whoever said to check out the Virtual Console; lots of good old-school stuff there. You might want to check out the demos on the eShop too. I downloaded a demo for a game called Ambition of the Slimes a few days ago and enjoyed it, so that could be worth checking out.
