the best tip for total war: invest in money-making buildings before military ones
i never did this, always building barracks in Rome Total War rather than commercial and agricultural buildings, and always ran into money problems later (always being in negative figures and not being able to get out of them)
recently, i started building money making buildings first, and although the battles were quite a bit harder (since i had less developped units and fewer units), i quickly caught up since i had a very large income
