It's not that hard. Personally, I couldn't really get into it by myself. I have a friend who introduced me to the basic mechanics and then I spent hundreds of hours playing on my pace.
The best part about the game is that you can set whatever goal you have in mind. Maybe you want to conquer the world. Maybe you want to make your family insanely big. Maybe you want to keep your blood pure and incest away. Maybe you want to make a religion the best. Maybe you want to make a single province the most influential in the universe. All up to you.
