This was one of the beautiful palaces in Berlin. Even though it's closest to where I lived, it wasn't the first I visited. However, there is interesting architecture to view there. I'm not really qualified to talk about it so much, so if you really wanna know about this place, I'd suggest the Wiki page.
But, come Christmas time, this is one of the locations that hosts a Weihnachtsmarkt. For those of you who don't know what that is, it essentially is a small family oriented festival geared at Christmas time with stalls that sell gifts, ornaments, seasonal Christmas food, and more. But most importantly, if you're going to go wandering through one, you need a cup of Glühwein. At these markets, they sell this sort of mulled spiced wine, that you can get different shots of liquor in if you wish. Plus if you're a visitor, it's the perfect place to go for souvenirs to bring back to your family or friends.
The market here is typically very low key but still interesting. There is no admission charge, unlike some of them, for example, the WeihnachtZauber Gendamenmarkt which charges admission.
If you'd like to wander on down Schloßstrasse, you'll have a lovely view as the buildings here are very classic and seem fairly expensive. Eventually you'll come upon Sophie Charlotte Platz and the U2.
If instead, you'd prefer to head down Otto-Suhr-Allee, you'll eventually come to Richard-Wagner-Platz and the U7.
This was where my German girlfriend first learned that I owned a gun back home. It was quite hilarious the total shift she had for awhile in her dealings with me. There was always the joke of me as a 'Murican being a bit of a Cowboy, but suddenly the reality that she was dating a gun owner at the time, very much stressed her out. Eventually things went back to normal, but it was definitely a culture shock for her. Still it was the first time I'd been there, and it was a very pretty place to walk around in with stuff I just don't have back home. For some reason while we were there, someone was doing some art project on the castles in the area, and asked us to take part in a survey. I tried to decline, but apparently my data was more valuable than hers being a native German. It was extremely odd.

You surprise me everytime... I was not aware of the fact that some Weihnachtsmärkte charge admission.. What country am I living in!? XD
And I totally understand your german gf, it would freak me out at first as well.. It's just not common at all here. Hardly anyone owns a gun while in the US, around 50% of households have one, right?!

It's not like I brought it with me ;)
I didn't own a gun until much later in life... after I'd become fascinated with Archery.
I like Archery because of the targeting, accuracy part of it, the breathing etc...
Later I had an opportunity to try guns and found it to be the same thing, only less physically intensive...
More precision.
And then I inherited one. So yeah, I have one. -shrugs-
I almost never use it :D

Yeah, rarely when people come out to visit me that haven't ever shot a gun before, I typically pull it out, clean it up, and we go to a local shooting range. It's cheaper if they start with my gun, because the ammunition for it is cheap, and to shoot there, you either bring a gun, or rent one. So it's one less gun they need to rent.
And yes, they typically want to rent at least 2 more guns after they've shot mine. :)
So yeah, I almost never use it :D
