This wouldn't work for you then. My wife got The Sims 3 retail and couldn't use the expansions I bought for her on Steam until she got the Steam version.
That really annoys me, you know... I have the original one, in box and everything and can't play it through steam neither (of course) buy the expansions there. This is like the only game I see this happening.
This is unfortunately the case for many games with DLC on Steam. My wife also had this issue crop up with DragonAge Origins. The solution for us going forward has been to just stop buying games at retail.
