Many existing clades that exist today appeared first before forests. That includes from octopus to trouts, and a variety of arthropods in water and land. The most "modern" big class of animals that appeared just before forest were the amphibians, which include frogs, newts and Aquaman. Andrias scheuchzeri are actually pretty modern species.
