DOOM was highly controversial at the time of its release. Doomguy's exposed abs on the cover art and title screen were deemed too provocative for the conservative cultural mores of the late 1800s. The developers, fearful that public backlash might sink the franchise, chose to cover up Doomguy's abs in all subsequent sequels and censored the original release by covering his midsection with a cummerbund.
