I didn't say you should build an engine. There is an engine called Build Engine and some of my all-time favorite games were made in it. That includes Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood, PowerSlave/Exhumed.
oops, i did not know about it, but actually , i tried making a engine once , simple one , but i could not manage to advance , i need a lot of time and knowledge and help to make one .
I'm looking into it right know seems great and those games you mentioned ,are awesome and well made! .
I think making your own engine isn't really worth it, unless you want to make a game that would be hard to make in existing engines. Considering how much time and effort has to be spent in order to make a good engine.
