We do kinda the same. At least in the "small" family - my parents, brother + waifu and me - we always go out for dinner if somebody has b-day. Sometimes with and sometimes without spending the afternoon together. I think it's even nicer since my bro moved out. It suddenly gets another meaning :)
At home with friends drinking beer and wine, possibly cooking meat around the hearth.

i would be in Australia ...
