Edit: If it is in your inventory, you can always send the gift to the email, which is usually the same as the one for his account, so you can avoid searching them and adding them in friends, but is up to you to decide how to do it anyway. Again, thanks for the generosity ^^

Yea, I know that you can send gifts through e-mail, but I'm not sure how it works. I remember that I sent a DOTA to someone, but it was still in my inv....gifts will disappear when the person will apply them ?

Yup, basically the item is still yours until the receiver accepts the gift.
