Seriously: cats are really "chill" creatures, and even greater if you get them VERY young (like, super young like girls because they are super impressionable) because you can "train" them to come to you when you call them. However, older cats and kittens after a few months become soul-draining useless (but fun if you have laser pointers).
Dogs can be great when they aren't completely dependent upon you for attention, food, drink, healthcare, exercise, love, training, ........ at least with dogs, even older ones are still trainable to a degree.
Hopefully you are getting a good breed of cat (active cats can be annoying when you're sleeping as they will get into fucking everything that isn't bolted down).
I'm getting a 6yo male domestic shorthair orange tabby. He has always been indoors and around dogs and he was really affectionate with me saturday despite just being owner-surrendered that day and being a bit stressed with the new place. Once the adoption folks get him cleared by the vet and microchipped, he'll be ready for me to pick up. I live alone and have only lived here for about a month so don't have a very wide social circle. I think he'll be perfect for keeping me company.
Well, that's always great to rescue animals but just be aware that the cat may have picked up some bad habits from the previous owner (not from abuse, just from lifestyle). I used to raise cats so I've had my fair share of weird ones: Swiper the Siamese that loved to sit on your shoulder and suckle your ear while kneading your neck; Boots the Mutt Calico that ALWAYS came when called and loved to sleep in bed with you (preferably he would try to sleep on your face and try to kill you with love, literally); Alee the Runt Calico who was just somehow really... small; I have a picture of her growing no longer than a DirecTV remote (she was fed and healthy just... small?). And more, so it's always fun to learn the quirks with cats.
Yeah, and my grandpa is getting a cat this month so I will have to learn to get my way around those beasts! I've heard a lot of good and bad things about them, but aside one cousin who adopted two cats everyone in my family had a dog at some point.
I prefer cats - I find them cuter to look at and more pleasant to interact with. It's generally also easier to take care of a cat compared to a dog in my experience.
