Sorry to hijack, but there's something important you need to know. If I remember correctly, the gift is mislabeled and you only get the base game from it. Now, don't get me wrong, this is one of my favorite games and really is very good, but it's only individual battles, no long-term strategy.
The Galactic Conquest DLC corrects that by adding a galaxy map for you to campaign on, where fleets are persistent. How many ships you have left matters and damaged ships stay damaged. You also construct the ships and train the pilots on your planets. So it becomes a proper space strategy game. Sadly, the winner will need to buy the DLC separately. :(
