Well I strongly recommend you any manga written by Tsutomu Nihei. Specially Blame!, Biomega and Knights of Sidonia. Blame! can be a bit abstract because he tries to use the drawings more than dialogue to convey meaning so a good starting point in my opinion is Knights of Sidonia. There is no order really, I started with Blame! and still loved all his works.
Then I recommend Claymore by Norihiro Yagi. Excellent story and memorable characters.
Lastly for now I recommend you Gantz by Hiroya Oku for another good scifi manga.
Those are all kinda gruesome, if you want some commedy try Grand Blue or Prison School manga.
