Real-time strategy games are quite rare these days, especially ones that are not just a paint job on a StarCraft clone. This one is luckily not like that.
Strategic Warfare In a Nifty Environment is closer to the best RTS ever made, Ground Control. I know, you never heard about it, it involved careful planning and real-time tactics instead of spamming the mouse buttons as fast as possible. After all, just like this game, it was made in Europe, and not by an American company who think "warfare = shouting at/bombing a lot of people until we win."
You have to be careful as you wage war against those pesky rabbits (naturally we all know you'll play with the pigs, who wouldn't?), because your resources are limited and there are no peons to gather more; you have to play well to survive.
All in glorious HD-ish glory. And a working multiplayer. And widescreen options. Sorta.
By the way, the old 2001 version of the game is totally free, but since the original webpage closed down, you need to look for mirrors to find it.

I played the heck out of my physical copy back then. As for the Ground control games, I liked the first one abit more... probably cause I found the second one harder. But I had a lot of fun playing both, enough to buy them on GOG and play them from time to time.
So thanks for making this GA, talgaby. Have a nice weekend! :-)

Have you heard of Impossible Creatures? Its mechanics probably haven't aged well nowadays but it is a pretty interesting RTS. All your units in it (except for the workers) are a combination of two animals which you create yourself and you have to search around to get DNA samples of the wildlife to be able to use them in mishmashing a unit together. It's far from complicated but it's a pretty neat little gimmick.
The only other RTS-s I remember playing were Age of Mythology, which I don't need to tell you why it's good, and Company of Heroes, which while having vastly different mechanics from most RTS games I've heard of immediately loses a lot of point with me for being a World War 2 game. <.<
Anyway, thank you for the giveaway. :)

Ground Control was a game that I felt missed the mark. It felt like you could, in far too many missions, just brute force your way through, without having to use much int he way of tactics.

Felt but often not really, unless you were ready to lose entire squads. And the game does stop giving you reinforcements after a while. You could use that tactic in the second game though, as you had infinite reinforcements.

Teenage me did at least not have any problems beating Ground Control at least :P I've not played it since I was in my mid teens, but then I did at least not have any problems with it.

This is an absolute must have classic. I think I have a physical copy, a GOG copy and maybe even a Steam copy too...
