Thanks a lot! However, I think that Steam can ban your account or at least a VAC ban if they catch you activating a game through VPN D:

I'm pretty sure that's the case. That's why it's a no-no to encourage such practices.

Yes, there is a new thread asking if you get banned and pretty much everybody is telling the OP to NOT do it! I doubt Valve's Ban Hammer gives you just a couple of days off... lol

However, there is no law requiring them to region-lock or geo-lock the game for Germany. There is just a sale restriction, affecting vendors. As an adult customer you are allowed to buy (import), own and play the game.

Unfortunately Bethesda won’t listen to any advice being given. Initially, when the game released, they’ve had the geo-lock applied for Austria and Switzerland, too, justifying it by referring to German laws – shows what ‘experts’ work in their legal department.

I'm a little confused:

  1. Who putted in place the sale restriction? Isn't it the government?
  2. How can you import and play a game key on Steam? Just buying a ROW key would do?
  3. Basically Bethesda could allow their keys who have been bought in X country but activated on Germany to allow the activation instead of just restricting the activation altogether? If so, they are "experts" alright...

  1. Yes, it's forbidden by law (government) to sell the game in Germany, due to swastikas being displayed. It’s stupid because in films and TV shows it’s allowed. Unlike films, games aren’t regarded as a form of art in Germany, unfortunately. But it’s not illegal to buy or own such games, if you can get them elsewhere.
  2. Theoretically you could just buy a ROW key or the retail version outside of Germany and would be allowed to take it home and play it, if you are living in Germany. But the geo-lock Bethesda put in place makes it impossible to activate or play the game in Germany unless you use a VPN.
  3. Yes, they are just not allowed to advertise or sell the game in Germany, as already mentioned.
That geo-lock is not necessary. The two new Wolfenstein games from Bethesda are the only games with such restrictive locks. Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Wolfenstein 3D can be activated and played in Germany, they are just not being sold there. If you buy them in another country or receive them as a gift, you can play them. There are also newer titles, like Zombie Army Trilogy, which work perfectly fine in Germany. They are just not being sold there.

If there was any law requiring them to apply these locks, like Bethesda claims, the abovementioned games would also be affected. But that’s not the case. Calling them experts was ironically. ;-)

I see... that sucks! I also used the quotes as a sarcastic tone of the word "expert", they are missing out on a lot of sales and having a bad reputation for german gamers! Is this game on GOG or some DRM-free platform? (other than the 7 seas of course, lol)

They're selling a censored "German version" here, with all Nazi references removed and with audio and text in German only. But I don't want any censored games and I'd like to play it in English. I think it's incredibly stupid having everyone speak German in a game like this! ;-)

Since the PC version requires Steam you either have to use a VPN (too inconvenient and risky for my taste) or sail the 7 seas. ;-)
Buying this for console would also work, no region locks there. But i don't have one and I don't want to play a shooter with a controller.

Oh yeah, you've now reminded me of an article I read about Bethesda removing all the nazi symbolism of the game. It does seem like a gimped version in a lot of ways, you don't have to play the game in its native language, it's ultra censored and they force you to play it with DRM only! I bet if it hits GOG it will sell like hotcakes with an uncensored version.

Oh well, hope Bethesda is not cranky when their sales of this game in Germany are low (Poor Machine Games though)! YAAARGH!!! Lol jk

Not sure why he said VPN when usually the case with Germany is you can't buy the version but can redeem them.

Really Comissar Houdini? Well Destroyer13 confirmed that you can't activate it nor play the ROW version of the game on Germany, and then explained that there is a specific version for the german market that is quite censored.

Yeah... I don't understand why they are so censorship hungry with games, it's a from of art just like films, books or music! Yet they insist in being overprotective with their poor and innocent citizens :/

PS: Idem with Australia

Sorry, thought you were german!
That's true, they are, and there's a quote I really like that applies to this pretty well... "Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable"
The comfortable law makers don't get it tho.
Art aside... i just think that it's bullshit to police adult human beings. 12 year olds play Call of Duty and there is nothing that's done about it.

No I'm a long way from Germany (central america), but I used Google Translate to understand your comment :]

Maybe in 10 years lawmakers will view videogames as an art form and not just a banal entertainment. And about COD filled with kids... it's the parent's fault if their children are exposed to adult or mature content, and that makes the lawmakers even more hypocrites.

I checked your Steam profile when you replied in english so I knew :P
But interesting to see that this matter gets awareness from other countries as well.
And yes, hopefully this day will come! It's funny tho that in Germany all the stuff America censores is fine and vice versa.
America has blood and gore but no f#%ks and we have fuuuucks and just flowers and happiness.

That's usually the case. Yet, there are exceptions. A few games have a simple activation lock, but once you've managed to redeem them, you're good to go. And then there's even less games that have an activation lock + a launch lock. The New Order introduced the latter.
