Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson: Contrary to how it sounds like, it's not a Dan Brown kind of thing ;). It's geeky, funny and has a lot of character. If you like it, I also recommend his thre part "Baroque Cycle" where some of Cryptonomicon's characters' ancestors appear.
